Temp on ovens
« on: April 22, 2005, 12:04:14 AM »
Ok, I'm trying to figure out how to use the oven here. I'm trying to cook something using and American recipe. It says to cook it at 350F, so I decided just to go from C to F. Then I looked at the oven, and it has weird number 1-6 markings. (it's a gas oven) Does anyone know convert this into C or even better, to F?

This conversion of Celsius to Fahrenheit, and vice versa, comes from the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual. Hope it helps, as tedious as the conversions are...

To convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply the Celsius temperature by 9, divide that number by 5, and add 32 to the that number.  Or multiply the Celsius number by 1.8, then add 32.

To convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius: Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit number, multiply that number by 5, then divide that number by 9. Voila.

Gas marks are easy to convert to F.  Gas mark five is 375 F.  Then there is 25 degrees between every number.  So,  Gas mark 4 is 350 F, Gas mark 6 is 400 F and so on.   :)

Sorry... when i read your original post, it looked like you were just going to use the same numbers, like if it said 350F you were going to put it on 350C (which you couldnt do anyway cos most ovens dont go up that high!)

I guess i read it wrong!
