American style pizza
« on: September 11, 2003, 05:14:33 PM »
Italian is nice and fine (although I don't like them) but lately I've been dying for a deep dish chicago style pizza.

Apparently brits think they are disgusting (is it just me, or is it true that if you say something is american brits instantly think it is disgusting?) so I'm not even sure if you can get them over here. I described one once and I was told it was the definition of a bad pizza.

Quite frankly, if a Brit told me it was definition of a bad pizza, I would merely tell them they don't know pizza!  ;D

I know it probably sounds a bit snobby of me, but when it comes to things that *I* think are fairly distinctly American, I don't expect too many Brits to know beans about what makes for good (insert fairly distinctly American food item).

Probably the only place I've seen anything deep dishy thus far is Pizza Hut.  I know, I know...but so far it's the best I've seen.  Although we DO have a Chicago Rock Cafe about a 10 minute walk from us that we haven't tried yet, so I'm hopeful there may be some decent pizza about!

I'd agree with Elle here, and say that for restaurants Pizza Hut has the best deep dish I've seen.  If you're going for frozen, though I've actually seen quite a few good contenders.  Of course the name of the most recent is slipping atm, but it was very similar to Tombstone pizzas with its crust.

And, you may want to beware of the Chicago Town frozen pizzas...from everything I can tell/have heard, they're *not* good in the deep dish category.  ;)
