Length of time after receiving EU citizenship?
« on: July 17, 2005, 01:05:57 PM »
Is there a length of time after one receives EU citizenship before one can move to another EU country? I received Swedish citizenship in late April and was told by someone (who might just be guessing) that there is a waiting period of a year or so until one can move to another EU country. This sounds farfetched to me but you never know.
I'm an American (with dual citizenship) living in Stockholm, Sweden for almost 6 years.

My Swede and I are looking towards a future move to the UK.

I think what Garry is trying to say is no, there is no waiting period.  Once you have citizenship in an EU country, you have the same privileges as anyone else.

Perhaps your friend is referring to citizens of the 10 new EU countries, for which some of the original 15 countries have placed restrictions.  In certain cases, these new EU citizens will still need permits to live and work for some time to come:

As you have Swedish citizenship, however, this should not affect you.
