Fresh Dip?
« on: July 20, 2005, 05:57:16 PM »
Are fresh dips available in the USA or does anyone have recipes for some (like sour cream & chives, that kind of thing) nothing too adventurous!

Thanks!

Chip dip is a sour cream and chives kind of thing, there is also vegetable dip which is more of a ranch dressing flavor.  They are usually in the dairy section by the sour cream and cream cheese.

There's a brand of 'french onion' dip I love - it's called 'Helluvagood'. Comes in a full fat and low fat verison. Great with veggies.

Do you like guacamole? That's easy to do. Also spinach dip or homemade french onion dip. Got recipes for all...

My Mom's friend, Deb, makes this amazing dip - we call it Deb's Dip.  Original, I know.   ;D

One cup sour cream, half cup mayo (must not be Miracle Whip), 8oz cream cheese and one packet of dry onion soup mix.  Blend it together with a whisk and let sit for for awhile to blend flavors.  It makes a ton, but we only make it for parties.  YUM!

Mmm BLT (bacon lettuce tomato) dip is DELISH!  My aunt makes a really good version of this, but here is a simple recipe from Allrecipes.com:

INGREDIENTS:
1 pound bacon
1 tomato, chopped
1 (32 ounce) jar mayonnaise
32 ounces sour cream
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
1 (1 pound) loaf sliced white sandwich bread

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:
In a large skillet, brown entire pound of bacon until crisp, placing cooked strips on paper towels to absorb grease.
For best results, finely chop bacon in a food processor or with a hand blender, but finely chopping by hand will also work.
In a large mixing bowl, blend bacon, tomato and jar of mayonnaise. Add half the container of sour cream, blend well. Add more sour cream by spoonfuls, until the mixture isn't overwhelmed by the taste of mayonnaise (you'll be left with about a cup or so of sour cream, typically). LIGHTLY coat the top of the mix with garlic powder, and blend. Add a dash of salt and pepper to taste. Toast the bread, then cut into fours.

You guys are great thank you!

No disrespect Liza, I am hoping to stay away from the famous dried french onion soup mix packet ;) That seems a very famous recipe!

I didn't like dips until recently (with crisps & veggies) but I have fallen for the ones in Waitrose (Sour cream & chive, caramelized onion etc) but when I look on the ingredient list it's way more complicated than mayo & sour cream, there's lemon juice and all sorts so I thought I should investigate.

As usual - you have all helped and I do like the sound of one with cream cheese and BLT (which actually made me hungry!) and good to know there's ones available to just buy in case I screw up!

You can buy some really scrummy ready-made guacamole at Sam's Club and Costco pretty reasonably (cheaper than buying the avocados and everything sometimes!).  But whatever you do, stay away from the Dean's brand of guac.  I love their other dips but for some reason, the guac just tastes too processed and fake to me.

I just mix up sour cream, garlic, chives, some salt and a wee bit of cayenne and black pepper.  Sometimes I'll add a parmesean cheese or some lemon juice.  Just mix it all up to taste and let sit in the fridge for a few hours for the flavours to develop. Careful with the garlic as it's taste will become stronger!

Yeah! Helluvagood is by far the best store-bought dip! But make your own! They're so easy!

(I'll keep quiet on the guac issue ... I know it's a sensitive one for all of you avocadophobes) ;)

This one goes down well with everyone, it is a Persian dish known as "Boorani"

One pot of thick Greek type yoghurt (I use Total brand)
One packet of fresh or frozen spinach (I find fresh baby spinach is the best)
Garlic cloves.

Cook the spinach, allow to cool and chop finely.  When completely cooled (you can speed this up by rinsing in cold water) stir it into the yoghurt. Then stir in at least 2 cloves of crushed garlic, or more if you are a real garlic fan.  Chill for half an hour or until you want to eat it. Serve with warm or toasted flat bread, eg pita, naan.  Easy peasy and everyone loves it.
