Any good Mexican restaurants??
« on: July 24, 2005, 06:15:57 PM »
I lived in California and now live in Houston Texas, I know I will miss some GOOD Mexican food, does anyone know if there's any good places outside of London towards the Berkshire area?  Thanks. SANDRA

P.S Info for good Cuban restaurants appreciated too (ex Versailles in Los Angeles)

It's a chain, but Chiquito's is pretty decent.  It's the closest I've come to real Mexican food over here (which isn't really saying much, but it works for me!).   ;)

There's a Chilis in Reading if you count that as Mexican.  I think there's also a Santa Fe in Reading, they call their food "Southwestern" but they do have some enchiladas and things on the menu.  Sadly, the UK is not the place to come for good, authentic Mexican food!

Finding decent Mexican food is hard, and finding it outside of major cities is nigh on impossible.  Best thing to do is get some good recipe books and make your own here.  Lupe Pintos stocks all sorts of good ingredients that you can order online.  Cool Chile also has some good stuff.

However, there's a very nice Cuban restaurant in London (just across from Waterloo station..can't for the life of me remember the name!) and Cafe Pacifico in Covent Garden is also fairly good.  I have to admit, I wouldn't touch Chiquito with a ten foot pole, but that's just me being a Mexican food snob.  :)

I've been very impressed with a place called Mariachi's here in Edinburgh though, if you ever come up this way.  Cheap, great service, and they are very authentic.

Ah, the eternal quest of the American Expat!

Give the one in Windsor a miss - it's really not very good at all.... There are two in the general area that I'm planning on trying as soon as we've got some expendable income - one in Marlow and one in Bourne End....

And to top of the never-ending quest, you can expect to pay thru the nose for what is, in essence, mediocre. I have yet, even in London, to have really good Mexican. Fortunately, since I enjoy cooking, I'll make it myself but I sure do miss being able to go out for it.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

There's a Cuban restaurant in Angel in Islington but I've never been.  It's across the street from Islington Green by Starbucks.

As far as Mexican food goes, my vote is for Cafe Pacifico in Covent Garden.  Chiquitos is average.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Cafe Pacifico is the best i've found in the area.

The Mexican in Marlow is good, but it didn't taste like real Mexican to me. It was good for what it was.

I make my own Mexican dishes whenever I crave food from back home.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and pack ingredients to make your favorite Mexican dishes with. Spices, chilis, sauces, anything you can think of. You will not regret it.

Kristi, let's go!  To the Cuban place, I mean!  I am dying for some good Cuban food...

I've seen it as well walking to my uncle's shop on Essex Road.
