Any ideas about preparing Tofu??
« on: August 02, 2005, 08:53:49 PM »
I have bought some smoked tofu and regular tofu. Does anyone have any ideas or recipes for preparing tasty tofu dishes??

Thanks

I like to marinate it for an hour or two in soy sauce, lemon juice and garlic then grill or barbecue it.  Great on skewers.  Any leftovers are good cold in sandwiches too.

Throw it in the bin!!

Just kidding!

Britwife is right, tofu doesn't have much flavor of it's own so it's critical to allow it time to absorb the flavors of whatever you mix it with. Marinades are good but you can also put it in soups and things like chili or casseroles.

Not sure about the smoked tofu though...
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I've not noticed you posting...or am I gone loopy [smiley=dizzy2.gif]

I've done a curried tofu for the veggie folk at BBQs but I'm not a tofu eater...my mates said it was good.

I've made chili using firm tofu rather than beef - it's great as the flavor of the chili is picked up by the tofu...mmmm...

When frozen, it makes a fine brick, doorstop or self-defense weapon.  ;D

Just kidding.  I used to have a nice recipe for chocolate almond tofu pudding somewhere but lost it.

if you freeze the tofu first, then when you defrost it you can crumble it up and put it in chili.  You can also mix it up with lentils/coucous/etc and stuff a red pepper or a scooped out zuchini (sp?).

I like to press my tofu b/f i use it.  I overturn a plate, put the tofu on top, put another plate on top, and then put a couple cans on.  then, when i cut up and skewer it doesnt' fall apart.

the yummiest tofu is deepfried.  then add at the last minute to stirfries....

silken tofu can also be used to make cheesecake.

can you tell I was a veggie for awhile?

I assume you have regular tofu and not the silken type.

Do as Meggles suggests and press all the water out of the tofu.

Next slice it into 2 cm thick slices and then layer it with a spag. sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese.  Throw it in the oven for 1/2 hour or until hot and the cheese is melted.

Dice the tofu and crumble a vegetable OXO cube. Sprinkle this over the tofu and let it sit there and soak up while you heat some oil in a non-stick pan. Panfry over a medium heat until it is golden and crisp around the edges. If you want, this is the time to sprinkle some soy sauce over all. Turn up the heat a bit. Sprinkle a tiny bit of sugar on it and toss it around in the hot pan until getting really crispy and sugar caramelising a bit. Toss in a few slivered almonds or cashews if you think that sounds nice. Serve this as a topping to some stir-fried vegetables, garlicky steamed spinach, or roasted baby new potatoes. Or anything you like, really!

There's one idea for ya!

The smoked tofu will make a great sandwich if you slice it in thin slabs and panfry it. Serve with sliced tomatoes, sprouts, lettuce, grated carrot, all sorts of salady bits. Don't forget to butter the bread! :)
