Tourists in cowboy hats ?
« on: August 03, 2005, 06:52:10 PM »
Everytime I have come across a male tourist with an American accent, he has been wearing a cowboy hat. Is this just a weird coincidence, or is it standard American tourist attire? If so, why? I've never seen anyone wear a cowboy hat in the US. And here in northern England, you don't exactly have to worry about the sun's rays giving you a heatstroke if you're not wearing a hat with a big brim.

I've never noticed that, personally... they sure are doing their duty of living up to the stereotypical Yank! Usually you can spot the American tourists here in Scotland because they're the only ones wearing tartan!  ;D

I've never seen anyone wear a cowboy hat in the US.

I lived for a while in Louisiana, right near the Texas border. All the men wore cowboy hats. I think it was some kind of rule.

It's the code of the west ain't it?

Talking about cowboy hats.....my son still insist on wearing one even after he had been here for 5 yrs.......He bought a black stetson when we went back home last year......OMG he has some REAL Bubba moments....he walked out of here the other day with a pair of home made shorts made from jeans........hiking boots with white ankle socks and a white t-shirt with the sleeves cut out and his cowboy hat on........when he wears that thing I make him either walk way in front of me or way behind........

he is just ASKING for ridicule!

Thank God I'm a Michigan girl - no cowboy hats here - unless they are southern or western anyway.   ::)

Honestly, if you need to wear a cowboy hat and you aren't a cowboy..... isn't that like wearing a fire helmet if you aren't a fire fighter?  I guess it's a fashion statement of some sort.

I love cowboy hats!  I have worn them-of course I like to wear hats though.  I haven't seen any since being in the UK.  I used to see them a lot back home-especially when I passed by certain country bars.

Ok - but what part of the States where you?  If you are in Texas or some such place, then it's just part of the uniform.  But an accountant from Dearborn, Michigan who has never known any more of a cow than what he sees on his plate is a different story.  ;)

I totally agree - an American in anywhere but the US with a cowboy hat would just totally embarass me.  In this country people can get away with wearing anything.  But you just don't want to look like a total American tool outside your home country!!!

My sister, who has visited the UK, as well as other European countries, as a tourist, is under the impression that she gets treated better when people realise she is American. Is it possible that American tourists try to stand out and make it obvious that they're American because they think they'll get better treatment?

I see women wearing small matching cowboy hats to hen parties. But it is obvious that they are at hen parties. The hats they wear don't look like the hats worn by American tourists.

mines a US hat I bought in Va...kinda looks like this:

I wear it around festie with my oversized Jackie O' sunglasses

but some of the girls I've seen are wearing it for fashion...the hen party ones are the naff sequined ones...I seen those around... :P

The american tourists must trying to compete with the kiwis/aussies then...they wear wider brimmed ones ;)
