Best way to Call the UK, (no landline, no broadband)
« on: August 04, 2005, 06:01:06 PM »
I recently moved to London and my girlfriend lives in New York.

She does not have a landline or broadband, only a cell phone.

What is the cheapest way for her to call me on my mobile in London.   I know this may require her to get a landline or broadband.

Thanks

What company does she have her phone through? Most offer an international calling plan, for example it's 6 cents a minute to call a UK landline from my Sprint cell phone. I've also used Gorilla Mobile (www.gorillamobile.com) where you sign up, they bill you once a month and the calls are 5 cents a minute to a UK landline (but it's 25 cents a minute to a UK mobile). The cheapest rate to a UK mobile I've found has been IDT's GlobalCall calling card. You buy it in $25 increments but all calls to the UK (landline and mobile) are 10 cents a minute. Hope this helps.

I don't claim to know much about this topic, but I did hear something about it on the radio the other day. They said that Vodafone has a special international deal with lower rates. It's apparently a free service, but you have to ask for it specifically.

If you both have computers, Skype is the way to go.  The sound quality is excellent even with dial up.  You are tied to your pc though, that's the only down side, but if you can schedule your calls which is what we do, it is amazing.  And it is TOTALLY FREE!!!!

Just Google for "skype" and you will find it.

Here's an option, skype have a service called SkypeIn. She can call a number in the US, which is routed by Skype to your pc.

Penny Card is awesome for calling the UK from the US.  49cents to connect, then only 2cents a minute.

Pennycard is only good when you are calling a landline:(  But if she needs to call your mobile phone she can get a Minutpass card...14cents a min to a UK mobile with 5% bonus when you recharge.   It's the best calling card I've found and it works great from your mobile phone.
Only Time will tell.. it's just too bad she's a closed mouth B**!!!

My DF lives in the UK and calls me on my mobile all of the time from his mobile.  He has this number that he calls then it connects him to the US (kinda like a calling card).  It only uses his inclusive minutes with no extra charge.  I thought it sounded too good to be true but it actually works with the mobile provider he has.

I have to wait until tomorrow to talk to him because it's too late now, but I'll definitely ask him about the website that he got the number from.  And, I will also ask him which cell provider he's using (I know he's on a one year contract)  Just wanted to let you know I might have a good answer for you, but it might take a couple of days!

I have the answer for you!

My DF provider is O2 and he said it only works if you have a contract phone.  And here is the website:  http://www.simply-fone.com/

Looks like it's just for T mobile and O2 users.  Anyway, I hope this can help you in some way if you have either of those providers.  It really has worked well for us.

***Edit - Also, he said he got the tip from: www.moneysavingexpert.com  Maybe there's more information on calling the US in there?

word to the wise, if you can help it, dont go with the run of the mill phone cards. They may be cheap, but if you are calling from the us to the uk to a mobile the rates are 5 to 1 in minutes. From a mobile us to mobile uk its 9 to one. ughh. I got a landline with Southwestern Bell and paid 5 cents to a uk landline and 7 cents to a uk mobile. I could use it off a landline or mobile for the same price, but it cost me an extra $3 per month. but i had unlimited minutes on my mobile, and most companies offer similarly free nights and weekends so use them!   ;)hope it helps.
