How can we get the student board Bumpin?
« on: August 07, 2005, 05:32:09 PM »
Hey all,
I've been on this site for over a month and I've noticed this is one of the slower boards.  Where are all the students!!!???  You know there have to be TONS with all the UK-US exchange/transfer programs, let alone all the ex-pats.  How can we get more people talking on here?  Or where are they talking?  Can we advertise?  Let's get this going, any ideas?

I'll talk to you, darlin'.  :D

Seriously, what would you like to see people chatting about? Their courses and things along those lines? Could be quiet 'cause it's August and so people have sorted their visas out and are just waiting to come across....

I finished all of my papers in May and have got my grades for all but one class. So it's pretty dull for me in terms of school-related-issues until the 2nd week of October....

good point.
so what are you studying and where?

I'm still looking for grad programs.  It's been difficult to devote time to both researching that and getting the moving details all covered.

So far I'm looking at U. of Bristol, Royal Holloway, and U of bath.  If anyone has any personal knowledge/experience to share, I'd love to hear it.

I'd be in the field of theater/performance at bristol and Royal Holloway and in the field of sport/culture at Bath.

I'm doing psychology at the Institute of Education, University of London. I'm a big proponant of the Univ. of London - I think it's tough to beat the reputation, and it seems as though that counts quite a lot when it comes to your CV....

I like the Russell Square area - very lively, lots of places to go for a coffee or a beer, very student-y. Though I'm 36 so sometimes I feel a bit old to be in the university pub! LOL.

You're moving to Bath, right? That would be a decent trek into London for you! But then it takes me about an hour and a half door-to-door when you count the tube journey after the train (I'm in the north east suburbs of London.) I only went part-time last year (and will do again this year) so that meant that if I was clever with my time (i.e. went to the library after class rather than the pub  ;) ) I was able to only come in once a week....

DOH! Editing this to say that I was for some unknown reason thinking of Birkbeck, not Royal Holloway!!! That's in ... Surrey? Don't mind me - I haven't had enough coffee yet this morning!!!  ;)

I'm also at the Institute of Education, finishing my MA in school effectiveness and school improvement.  ;D
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

I'm trying really hard not to post every 20 minutes about not receiving the mailings from my intended school, my nephew who doesn't get it that he can't email me a letter and a scanned deed to show the consulate, the visa site isn't responding to my attempts to change my appointment, my fears that I won't get a student visa because I was denied an HSMP visa, and the dollar against the pound.

Where is the so frustrated that I could scream smiley?  I'm going back to my corner until something positive happens. :P

welcome kristi - that's two at U of L!   My partner will be at the education department at U. of Bath.

and good luck chrishamil!  yikes!

Anne, I'm pretty sure Royal holloway is in London.  and yeah, that would be a trek - about 1.5 hours.  but I would be doing a phd, so course work would be minimal so I wouldn't have to come out there often.  I still have so much to look into!  Makes me crazy anxious.

I'm in Leeds and will be attending the Univ of Leeds for my MA in international studies this year. I don't start for another 6 weeks or so, but am anticipating a reading list in the mail anyday now so I can get cracking! I'm sure I'll have a ton of things to discuss once classes begin, that's if I have time once they do!

Hang out with me, Anne!  I'm old enough to be your mother. :o

When mercury turns direct, I'll be earning an MBA in service sector management at Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh.  Since the word for today is frustration, I'm going out to lunch with my cousins and having a few jars.

While the board might not be "bumping," I have found that people reply pretty rapidly . . . but I agree.  I usually post on another board called archinect.com.  But this is only because I am an architecture student.  There are architecture students and professionals from what seems to be a good contingency of america and europe.

I am very excited to be attending the Architectural Association School of Architecture (or redundancy!).  I will be doing my masters studies, and possibly a PhD in Environment and Energy.  The Architectural Association (or AA for short) is in Bedford Square, which is very close to the University College of London and also very close to Russel Square and Goodge Street tubes.  We are  trying to score a nice place to live in Bethnal Green.  Will be living with our Irish friend as well as a friend of mine that got into the same program.

Currently awaiting visa stuff, hopefully we shoud get it back towards the end of the week!

Another student here!

I recently finished a very bad year at the Glasgow School of Art. Thankfully I have transferred to another university in Glasgow, which I am starting in late September, so I guess I'll start posting about how it's going for me then. My major is graphic design/communications and this will be my fourth and final year of it. I'm hoping this year will be a better one for me... my DF was at the uni I'm starting 5 years ago and he liked it, so here's hoping!  :)

Are there any other undergrads on this board? I know I'm one of the youngest people on here (I'm almost 22)!  [smiley=blush.gif]
Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit

I am an undergrad.  I will be studying Law at the University of Manchester starting in September.

I came over on the BUNAC program and met and fell in love with my sweet husband at the Mean Fiddler in central London.  (september 2002).  We got engaged at the end of my stay and he immigrated to the US.  Two years later, we are moving again!

I was actually a senior in college with one and a half semesters to go but I absolutely cannot stand to be here any longer (mississippi, not usa) so i am flushing those years down the toilet and starting over.

right now i am freaking out....will i be able to understand my professors?  what if i get english/american confused and make an ass of myself? i will be the oldest person in my class!!! (only 25 though, but still...)

ack.  I will be glad when I am sitting in class and the wait is over!!!
had a bit of a wobble.
