New-Dawn, another resource is a local high school. Often the driver's ed teachers there give private lessons on the side or have a private company outside of school hours and can be quite inexpensive. Good luck!

OOh, thats a great idea, would never have thought of that, hell if they're used to teaching 16 yr olds, surely they'll have patience for me! - thanks Paula :)

Too funny, FunGirl! At least we had the female gym teacher of questionable sexuality. ;)

Oh, sorry, New-Dawn! Best of luck with the driving! Everyone else has given you great advice about where to find a good instructor. You'll nail it.

We had the female gym teacher of questionable sexuality too - at an all girls school :-X

You're right on the advice, thank you all, I am thrilled by the response but especially the encouragement

My husband is learing to drive here in the states--but he never drove in the UK (he's in his 40s).  For now, I am teaching him.  We are doing various "skills" while he gets used to the car and its various pedels.  Thankfully, we have a rural area to practice in.

We already knew who we were going to use for a driving school, but were pleased to get a recomendation from our local DOL (good sign, thier recommendation was the place we had already decided on!).  I would certainly suggest checking with your local DOL and / or the local high school.  They are bound to know who the best ones to ask are!

Good luck and happy driving!
