Help with conversions?
« on: August 13, 2005, 05:27:26 PM »
I know someone uploaded an Excel spreadsheet to help with this but my laptop is broken and I don't have Excel on the computer I'm using. I've looked at some pages online and I'm getting frustrated trying to figure this out...

If anyone knows how to quickly convert this so I can make dinner, I'd really appreciate it. I bought some cream this week to make alfredo sauce and it's expiring so I need to use it tonight!

Here's what I need to convert:
1/2 cup of butter -- do I weigh the butter out on a scale? How much will 1/2 cup weigh?
2/3 cup of fresh grated parmesan -- do I weigh this too?

I've figured the rest out...  thanks if someone can help!

1 ounce is 28 grams.

You just need to work out how many ounces in your cups... 1/2 a cup is 4 ounces, i believe.

But wouldn't 1/2 cup of butter weigh something different that 1/2 cup of parmesan? That's what is kinda throwing me off...  I finally decided to just go and give my best guess at how much 1/2 cup of butter is (I'm pretty sure I remember the size of a stick of butter) and guess at what 2/3 cup of parmesan would look like. I guess alfredo sauce isn't going to have to be exactly right. :/

This popped up when typing 'half cup butter ounces' into Google.

Oh sorry...

I wouldnt bother measuring that stuff, to be honest... you know what the sauce is meant to look like and taste like... just start with small quantities, and keep adding until it looks / tastes right.  That's my usual method!!

I just bought a great new pyrex measuring cup for a few quid from Somerfield's with millilitres/litres, fluid oz/pints and cups on it.  I love it!   :)

In addition to the side measurements, it also says:

1 kilogramme = 2.2 lbs.
500 grammes = 1.2 lbs
454 grammes = 1 lb.
100 grammes = 3.5 oz
28.4 grammes - 1 oz
1 litre = 1.75 pints
568 millilitres = 1 pint

(approximate conversions)

Hope that info helps someone...   ;)

Remember sticks of butter in the states?  They were marked about every 1/2 inch or so into Tablespoons...  you can eye up butter measurements like that, or press into a measuring spoon/cup, and level off the top with the back of a knife blade (the flat part).

Cheese...
You can shred it, then pack it (not to tightly) into a measuring cup of the size you need.  My rule is.. you can never add too much cheese!  Then again, I'm from Wisconsin...  :P  *lol*

I go online for other conversions to:  http://www.onlineconversion.com/
You don't need any software to use it.   :)

Peace.

Thanks. Yeah, I measured the butter just by eyeing it and got the recipe to work without measuring any of it, except for the cream because it called for a pint and that I could measure. I was amazed that it turned out so good because I just don't cook! I made it again tonight and it was goooooooood. :)

I'll have to keep an eye out for measuring cups with actual cups marked on them! I was gonna ask my mom to mail me one along with some measuring spoons so I could still use American recipes without the trouble of figuring everything out. :)
