Tallinn and Riga?
« on: August 16, 2005, 12:52:05 PM »
My boyfriend and I are thinking of spending a long weekend in February in Tallinn (brrrrr chilly I know, but we are hoping for fewer tourists then!).  I've been reading hotel reviews at tripadvisor, also www.inyourpocket.com, etc. but wondered if anybody on this board has been there and can recommend any hotels, what sights not to miss, etc??

Same thing for Riga as well - we are hoping to spend about two weeks travelling around Latvia next summer.  I'm researching this but - does anybody have any recommendations, etc?

Thanks in advance.... :)

No, we haven't gone yet...we are saving up some money for our wedding this summer in Michigan!  ;D

I am still planning on visiting sometime within the next 12-18 months.....not sure if he will be joining me since I am now looking at a tour of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius and he prefers to "take his time" in each place!

I would highly recommend www.balticholidays.com - they have given me a ton of information and seem to always have great offers on hotels etc.  Also, I don't know if you live anywhere near Stansted but Easyjet now do flights to Tallinn...and you know how cheap Easyjet flights are!

Let me know if you make it over there before I do.....I'm also possibly looking for a travel partner to go on the tour I described which would take place during the August bank holiday!  :)

congrats on your upcoming wedding!!

thanks for the website. which holiday were you looking at? the £499 one? Baltics Capitals tour? that seems pricey for a 7 day trip not including airfare and August airfare may be high up if not booked in advance. I need to do some more research first. I am a savvy traveller and like to find the ins and outs.

I've done one organized tour like this in my life and it was awful... the dingiest hotels and schetchy tour guide practices. That was in Egypt.

We went to Riga in January (yes, timing was perfect and it was -25 C and WINDY the entire time we were there... 5 days. Very unusual, so we should consider ourselves lucky, I guess.

We had a great time, and had booked a double room in an "unrenovated" room at Hotel Viktorija (15 min walk to the old town). In addition to a very authentic soviet experience (including Russian tv channels) we only paid around 20EUR per night for the room.

The hotel was very clean, the staff was sullen and surly, and the restaurant on the corner had the best Latvian food in town.
I highly recommend it for a low-budget holiday.

Also, I would not recommend a package deal--these days cheap airlines will fly you over for peanuts, and hotels are very cheap by British standards. Our trip to Riga cost us 150EUR--return flights for two (Ryanair) plus hotel. I'd imagine it'd be tough to beat that. Estonia is also cheap, and if you look around on the internet you should be able to find reasonably priced hotels for all countries.

If you have any questions re: Tallinn or Riga I'd be happy to help if I can, I've been to both for short breaks.

excellent coffeebean, I am the ultimate budget traveller  ;) I know from friends that they have done it low budget too. I will be sure to message you when I decide when to go. Most likely a long weekend in each.

Well I have to admit I am not too keen on taking a group tour - I have never needed to be "shepherded around" from place to place and prefer to see things on my own schedule....

If I end up going to Tallinn I will probably still at least consider booking the hotel through Baltic Holidays as they seem to have good deals.  I don't need a four or five star place but frankly if I wanted Soviet-style customer service then I would have gone there when the Soviets ran the place!  ;)

Coffeebean, if you have any other tips can you please share them here?  Thanks!  :)

Well, if you insist...

For Tallinn I would browse through http://www.select-a-room.com/ or a similar site. You can search for the nights you plan on spending, and you'll get a list of hotels and room prices. I had a look at Baltic Holidays, and to be honest, their prices seem quite inflated. Anything in the Old Town is of course very central, but the center of Tallinn is quite small, so you'd be able to walk anywhere comfortably (and I presume hotels not in the old town would be slightly cheaper). Viru Hotel is very popular with Finns (or at least used to be); it's right on the edge of the Old Town, and their prices are quite good from what I hear.
If you want bootleg stuff, there's a market place within 10mins walk from the center that the locals seem to frequent.

For Riga we used http://www.balticsww.com/tourist/latvia/hotels.htm. Here's a good map of the city center: http://www.virtual.lv/maps/baltic500000/riga_centrs.htm. For reference, the hotel we stayed at (Viktorija--on A. Caka Iela, off 13. Janvara Iela) was a 15-min walk from the Old Town.
There are lots of interesting museums in Riga (like I said, it was -25C when we were there, so we went to a lot more museums than we would've thought to go to), but the Occupational Museum is a must-see. The Old Town isn't too big, and the Tourist Information office has maps and brochures on what to see.  What else... food was cheap; clothes and stuff were pretty much the same as in Finland (so a bit cheaper than in England).

There are lots of Finnish chains in both Tallinn and Riga (Stockmann's department stores, Seppälä clothing stores, Hesburger fastfood restaurants etc. one might want to steer away from for a proper Baltic experience. Likewise, restaurants at the mall in Tallinn (can't remember it's name but you'll know when you're there) such as Amarillo are also Finnish (well, so is the Sokos chain which owns Viru Hotel). Food's ok, but not really Estonian as such (the sort of fare you'd get at T.G.I. Friday's and the likes).

There's an excellent Indian restaurant in Riga. Of course if one lives in England that might not be too exciting, but here in the periphery of Europe one learns to seek out good Indian restaurants.

Can't think of anything else at the moment, but feel free to ask!

Oh, and learning a bit of local lingo is very much advisable--I talked to a friend who also went to Riga but didn't try to speak Latvian, and our experiences were very different. I thought people were very welcoming and nice, and she said they were very cold and rude... I'd imagine the same goes for Tallinn.
