I not only watch but I also play (as does my bf)...and yes, I wish I still was going to be on holiday next week so I could watch more of the Ashes.  Next summer if anyone wants to go see a game with me (at any level), I'll be happy to explain as much as I can...even I don't get everything!

That's a shame...well, next year, I'll invite people to my cricket club to watch both Ashes on the weekends as well as watching our local club (Hampstead) if they're in the area.  I think it's a shame that not everyone will be able to support this growing sport!

Now living with a Brit, I've watched several of the test matches and he's good about explaining WTH is going on.  Makes sense now.. and is nice to have someone explain!
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

How compatible is cricket and baseball?  I mean, if you are good at baseball, are you likely to be good at cricket?
One difference I can think of is the way cricketers seem to often block the cricket ball with the bat which I guess is a bit like a bunt but
bunts are pretty rare.  If you're a slugger in baseball, is it fairly easy to hit sixes?
Would Barry Bonds or someone of his calibre just hit every cricket ball out of the stadium?
Would a great baseball pitcher transition to a bowler quite easily?

I've always wanted to try the game but didn't know of a venue to give it a go really.

I was a softball player and it was an interesting transition.  I have a tough time bowling cause you can't bend your elbow...you have to throw it straight.  And if you are used to pitching with a bent arm, it's a hard transition.  Hitting is also different - you hold the bat differently, the ball comes at you differently (hits the ground, may spin, may go at 90 miles per hour in international games)...it's similar but very difficult.  I think pro baseball players would struggle a bit at first due to all the small but important differences.  And no - it's not easy to hit sixes.  And the block isn't really like a bunt...and the reason for the block depends on a lot of things.

Another thing to think about is that their is a huge amount of strategizing while hitting - you may be the first batter and need to just stay in there as long as you can during a test match...you want to wear down the best batters...so you won't go for huge hits.  The guys in the middle (3-6) may be the biggest hitters though even they have to think about how they're going to hit and where.  It's a mind boggling game once you get to the 'big leagues'!

Matt...where do you live?  If you are in London, keep an eye out on this board next spring as I'll invite people to come watch a game...we'll go to a club team game (quite competitive) and then if people like that I'll see if we can get tickets for Lords.  If you aren't in London, then I'd suggest finding a cricket league near you to watch...it's cool!
