Best place to buy supplements
« on: August 25, 2005, 02:57:29 PM »
Anyone have a favorite place to purchase supplements (like essential fatty acids) from?  My oldest daughter takes omega 3-6(combo of DHA, EPA, and Borage Oil), youngest takes a vegetarian form of DHA, and hubby and I take omega 3-6 oil.  I also take additional Evening Primrose oil and glucosamine. Oh yeah, and CoQ10 from time to time.
Seems like most places carry cod liver oil which I am not thrilled about-too much vitamin A&D.

We have a Holland & Barrett on our high street, so that's where I get all of mine. Prices are reasonable and the selection is quite good. Though I tend to stock up on simple stuff like vitamin C at Boots as they often have good offers on their own brand.

I get most of mine from local health shops.  Get one from nutriworld.co.uk, but now have sourced it locally.

I've noticed that Superdrug has a lot of different vitamin supplements, and they are much more reasonably priced than some of the health food shops.  For special things like oils, and that, I'm not sure.  One chain I know of is Napier, but they tend to be a bit pricey.  And, as others have said, Holland & Barrett's is good.

We have Julian Graves here. It's a chain place like Holland & Barrett.

I've also bought stuff from Hazelphron Herb Farm -- I only know about them because they're based in Cornwall (where I am now visiting the BF), but they're great. They do all sorts of vitamins, minerals, herbal tinctures, ointments, etc. I'm not big on that stuff, but I have tried some of their marinades and salad dressings and can vouch for those!

Thanks everyone for the replies.  I brought over a bunch when we moved in mid-June but the supply is dwindling.   But I'm still stocked on Advil-went to Costco before we moved and bought a mega bottle!

I'd love to find a way to keep my NyQuil/DayQuil supply topped up.  Even DH is a true convert to the stuff.

Well, you are not going to get the quality that one needs from the chains or the drugstores.  I recommend always going to an independent health food shop, and finding a place that knows their business.  ~~points at self~~  I work at such a place, and the owner demands that we all train to become certified nutritionists, with working knowledge of the supplements we sell, which ones are the best, and why, ect.

Take evening primrose oil, just as an example.  You see lots of places selling "high strength" and slap 1000 mgs on it to make you think that you are getting something good.  Milligram strength is really irrelevant when it comes to essential fatty acids, as it isn't the mg dosage that is the important part, it's the GLA percentage that is vital.  GLA (gamma-linoleic-acid) is the active ingredient in evening primrose oil - it's what causes results.  There are loads of places which sell evening primrose oil with a high milligram dosage but very little GLA percentage, like 1% or 2%.  Rubbish.  Some of them don't even tell you what the GLA% is!  Stay away from them!  You need at least a 10% GLA for it to work and be beneficial.   Sort of like wine.  If I  tried to sell you some wine with only 1% alcohol, you would tell me I was crazy; you know that that wine has no strength, it's very little more than grape juice.  Alcohol is the "active ingredient".  Same with the evening primrose oil.

Anyway, I won't go on....people tend to tell me to shut up (well, except when I'm in the shop, and they've come in for advice, that is) when I start in.  But, you'll feel more confident (and know that you are - usually - getting a better product) if you go to an independent retailer (and, preferably, one who doesn't sell their own label, so they can give you unbiased info, like we do at Healthy Living).

Don't know where you are, HantsMamma, but if you are in the East Midlands, we have the three shops: Leicester, Wigston, and the one I work at, Loughborough.

Hope I was more of a help than an annoyance...

Songmistress, I wish I was nearby-I'm in Hampshire.   After lots of research in the states I found companies that I trusted to purchase supplements from.  Our oldest daughter has special needs (a rare chromosomal syndrome) so I wanted to make sure that what she was taking was safe and appropriate.   While I could still order from them I would prefer (as would our bank account) to find a source over here.

If you wouldn't mind perhaps we can discuss via PM's.  Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I don't think this is strictly true.  For example, I bought echinacea from Superdrug, which was half the price of Napier's equivalent and it worked a treat.  I've also purchased other vitamin supplements from there and have never found fault with them.

Perhaps for certain items, this is true, but I don't think it's always the case  :)

We use Eskimo Kids Omega oils from nutriworld.co.uk, Hants.  I did a lot of research on it and found this to be the best thing going.  Our DD has gross motor skills delays and we've seen improvements on Eskimo Kids, which was recommended by other special needs' parents.

Be warned, it's not cheap, but got good results.  The tutti fruity flavour mixes great in our daughter's yoghurt.

I buy it locally now from a health food store, but used to order it from nutriworld.

Expat, I had to smile about putting supplements in yoghurt...our DD calls it her 'goodies'.  She has been taking various supplements from a very early age and would not how to act if her yoghurt or applesauce did not have anything added!
I'll keep that brand in mind as we deal with gross motor delays, among other issues.  She is currently on a brand called Pro-EFA.  In the past we have also used Coromega, Efalex, and cod liver oil with evening primrose oil.  That is just the EFA's!  I'm not sure what the consultant pediatrician thought of everything that she takes....but her pediatrician in the states did not have a problem.
