But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

oh Man I am wanting to re-read so many books from my childhood now!

Any of the Shoes books by Noel Streatfield, and of the Little House books, The Borrowers, A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels, the Chronicles of Narnia, and From the mixed up files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler are all musts!  Not sure what age it's for, but I recall liking Island of the Blue Dolphins as well.

Hey, reading is reading.  I would never discourage a child from reading a book.  And, besides, who wouldn't want to be able to magically make their school principal strip to his skivvies and become a superhero? ;D

'The Silver Sword' by Ian Serraillier - a classic and exciting novel about child refugees in wartime Europe - for young teens who want to learn a bit about WWII. In the same vein, 'When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit' by Judith Kerr, who came to the UK as a young German Jewish refugee.
