Miracle Pill for Migraine sufferers
« on: August 31, 2005, 11:43:19 AM »
Ended up in A&E on Sunday with a BADDD one..throwing up..blind spots..the lot!

I have had some doozy of ones that ended me up there but this is the first time the Dr. gave me a pill...oh what a glorious invention this is!!!

It is called Zomag....and my migraine was gone in a few hours..instead of suffering for several days...

It localises over my right eye and if you were to put a rod from my eye out the back of my head..it runs in a straight line...my neck gets sooo sore!

My mother had migraines..and we have been told they are heridatary....

I also wonder sometimes what the effects of having menengitis does to your brain..I had viral menengitis when I was 21...
My son was 3 and had chicken pox,  & scarlentina? I caught the chicken pox from him...had my menengitis and was in quarentine in the hospital for almost 2 weeks...and then a few days after getting out broke out in pox ALL over my body..down my throat...I had one on the soft palette of my mouth I couldn't swallow....

That was the year I married my ex...........NOT a very good year for me...

I used to suffer with crippling migraines from back as far as I can remember up until my middle teens.  I used to get them at least once a week and usually more, like three times plus.  Then, in my late teens and twenties they really slacked off and I would go months and months without getting one.  Lately it seems I am having a recurrence, 'though. :(  My doctor just put me on Imigran50 yesterday.  Not cheap at £6.50 per 6 pills, but if I get relief then I suppose it's worth it.   :-\\\\

Originally, when allergy tested all those years ago, it was determined at that time that my migraines were caused - or triggered - by an allergic reaction.  Unfortunately my triggers are hard to avoid: dust (try to avoid dust, just try without living in a bloody bubble), all known grass pollens, animal dander, and msg (the only one that's semi-easy to avoid - not completely easy because of EVERYTHING they put it in and add it to, dammit >:( ).

Nothing used to give me any relief if the headache was already "full-blown".  The only thing for it was to go through "the cycle": throw up, lay in a dark room and sleep, undisturbed (because if I got woken up it would hit back even harder), until waking up naturally.  If I caught the evil thing at the onset and fed myself a major dose of caffiene sometimes that headed it off and stopped it from becoming severe.  But, if not, I had to go through the cycle.

I thought that I had gotten a reprieve, a remission of sorts - and, I guess, for years I had.  I have a feeling they are now triggered by stress more than anything else.

MeShell, I am glad you have found a miracle pill that is working for you.

I take Zomig for my migraines and it's wonderful for me too!  I only take it when I'm really bad.. throwing up, etc.  You have to take it within the first 2 hours of a migraine or it won't work.  But when it does, you suddenly feel like a normal human being.

Glad you discovered the joys of Zomig!

So, what exactly is Zomig?  What does it do?  This Imigran is something which curtails the swelling in the brain.  Is that what Zomig does, too?

From what I can tell, they are basically the same type of drug.  Autumn, what you take is the UK version of Imitrex (sumatriptan) and Zomig is in the same family of drugs.

Ahhh...ok, then.  Thanks, Kristi.  Imitrex I have heard of.  Now I know what I am taking. :)

They didn't tell me I had to do it within the 1st 2 hours..cause I took mine about 6 hours after the onset.......and it still worked....

but sometimes I can stay them off with stuff like panadol.....

and strange as it may seem...sucking on Ice lollies helps as well..............

Yes, I always thought that eating something cold or sipping a cold drink helped...and an icepack right on the pain gives a bit of relief, too - but not enough to really function.

Last one I had, I didn't have Zomig with me so I was popping Panadol ultra every 2 hours.  Didn't even take the edge off.  Wet washcloth on my head helped me fall asleep for a while and then a super hot shower to massage my head.

I always get them behind my left eye, like someone's taken a clamp to my optical nerve.  I hate migraines.

With me it is always behind the right eye.  And, yes, I HATE THEM...they are evil.

mine is over my right eye as well.......David rubs muscle relaxer into my back and along my neck as well..i usually can find a muscle that when you rub it ..it zings right to my eye......They are vicious..I had one in Feb of 04 that I had to stop driving and call David and he had to come and get me...and I threw up on the side of the road..later that night had to go to the A&E.....

I bought some of those patches for headaches..and they got toooo cold for me to handle...
I am so grateful for my Zomag now.

I find that spearmint oil is a really effective muscle relaxant.  A former BF turned me on to it....found if I massage it into the base of my neck and my jaw joints/temples, it really helps.  I usually take parecetamol or migralieve as well, but the spearmint oil seems to speed up the relief.

Modified to add - I find Olbas Oil to be an effective muscle relaxant as well, but a little goes a looong way!

When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.
