involved?
« on: September 22, 2005, 12:18:53 AM »
How many students out there are actively getting involved with student groups, meetings, societies and in general trying to feel like part of the campus?

There were a ton of activities the past 2 weeks. I will attend 1 mandatory event tomorrow. I have been working full and part time and haven't had the chance to get to campus (I live at least 30min away by bus) and go to an event that may or may not be fun. I am a grad student and feel that I have had my fun and my college days of partying and staying up all night are over. I did that for 5 years. I have some wonderful memories and friends as a result. I came here to be with my brit bf and get my masters in a year - is it so awful or am I going to regret not getting too involved?

I'd love to know what others are doing...are you getting out there and trying new things and meeting ppl? I feel like I've done so much out of my comfort zone the past 2 months that I don't know how much more I can handle and this seems to be the icing on the cake, being forced to make new friends at events that meant just for that. I feel like I'm too old for that or something. I've been told maybe I don't have the guts...but I think after moving here and working and finding my way around, I certainly have them, it's just a bit much and I feel pushed/pressured and like I'm not doing enough when I've been pushed to my limit already.

Totally not my thing. But that could be my age.... And my work schedule.... I have been known to go out with some of my course mates for a few drinkies after class, but even that's rare. I usually find myself dying to get the commute over with and get home. God, I'm getting old.  ;)

You've got the guts, darlin. Don't worry about that. Take things as they come - don't pressure yourself. You've been through a lot with the move - you'll make friends and get involved in your own time. You'll probably hit it off with a couple of people from your classes and go out for a bite to eat or a drink naturally - don't feel like you have to force it!

Grad students are a serious lot here.  The partying, councils, and extra-curricular activies are focused mainly on the undergrads.

The "one big family" feeling here isn't pushed because the school is rather small.  The closeness that does happen comes naturally because we students see so much of each other.  It helps that there are lots of mature students too.  I get to know people in the computer labs.  Everyone is having difficulty downloading, remembering passwords, etc.  We commiserate!

Stay with what you are comfortable with.  I have volunteered to be a student advisor, but I'm not working and am in class only 2 days a week.  No, I'm not going to all the "meet and drinks," but I will go to a small wine & cheese do so we can meet the faculty and more of our cohort.

I have only a year here, and my priority is doing well with my degree.  As for partying, we'll have our memories!
When I find a funnier sig than twistedncynical's, it will be here.

My classes start officially on Tuesday but we had orientation all this past week. I've never been one to join clubs but I think I will this year. I definitely need to meet some new people!

Classes start on the 10th for me, but orientation is the 4th.

I think I want to join the Christian society, but historical dance bits take up everything else; plus I need time to actually study! (what's that agian?)

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.

I joined the Leeds Univ. music society - I did marching band all my life, so going back to concert band and all that is familiar and they go to the pub after rehearsal :)

I just joined the Central Regions Arts Club. They have artsy fartsy activities and meetings each month. I'm looking forward to seeing Brecht's 'Life of Galileo' in Brum the end of October and meeting other members of the club.

In two weeks we have a 6 hour tutorial in Brum. Looking forward to meeting my tutor and others in my course.
