I need help!
« on: September 24, 2005, 05:26:25 AM »
Now that it's official and I'm looking at moving in late Jan./early Feb., I'm completely lost! I had this all mapped out when I started looking into jobs but I'm so rattled with everything that's happened since Katrina hit that I can't seem to get my thoughts together!

Does anyone have a checklist of relo tasks they'd like to share with me? I know that any day now my organized self will take over but until then, I need some direction. Just a nudge would be appreciated... :-\\\\

Morning :)

some things I am doing

renewing my drivers liscense
getting letter from insurance co stating I'm a good driver
cheking these threads on "what I wish I would have known before I moved"
get your visa in plenty of time
selling off anything your not planning on taking with

for myself there hasnt been any do ahead time planning, all of my drama is happening at the last moment as theres some things I just caint sell until immediatley before the move, like my car for example, dinning room set..ect  I need to sell all these things but at the same time dont want to be sitting in a empty apt either as I have 4 kids and need essential stuff like that..

I have just been reading threw all the threads on here and taking note of other peoples experiances and opinions to try and make this as smooth as possible.  theres ALOT of great advice on here my first advice to you would be to take some time out and scour threw all the info, I know it's helped me tremendousley, I wish you the best :)

the thing i wish i did ahead of time- get a letter of intro from my US bank to show my UK bank. or transfer my US bank address to my new UK mailing address.  to save yourself the hassle of getting a bank acct in the UK.

I made a spreadsheet based on how many months left til the move and how long I thought I'd need to get a certain task sorted. Was sort of like a tick list but it eased some of my concerns because anytime I ran across something mentioned by another ex-pat I'd just add it to the list.

I had my doctor mail me a copy of all my medical records so I could give them to my new doctor here. I made sure I had anything legal I might need - certified copies of birth certificates etc, and I set up my bank account so I could wire money to myself here if necessary.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips. I'm a little less rattled and am starting to formulate a plan. Missy, the spreadsheet sounds like a good idea...I'll start one this weekend. Ordinarily, I'm obsessively organized. There's just been a lot going on here lately so pulling everything together seems a little overwhelming right now.
