Do our partners/hubbies sabotage our diets?
« on: September 25, 2005, 07:08:32 PM »
I am feeling rather annoyed with myself today.  I took the boys to Legoland yesterday. Me and half the population of England, but that's another story.... And I did so well and ate nothing - even when they were tucking into amusement park junk food..

Then we get home and are positively shattered and the dear boyfriend whips out my favourite: tortilla chips and guacamole and puts it right in front of me. After eating nothing all day except toast in the morning, I began to HOOVER.

And then the guilt set in.  I know he was just trying to give me a nice treat after a particularly trying day of standing in queues hour after hour, and I KNOW I should have had better willpower, but I didn't and I couldn't help wishing a tad bit that he would just follow my directions and NOT put this stuff in front of me.  :-\\\\

ANyone else struggling with a wellmeaning, food offering other half?

Two-prong solution...well, three...this how I would handle it

1) Don't fast all day.

2) Take a portion of the chips and guacamole that fits in with your eating plan, put the rest aside, and top up with something healthier, like apples or mangoes or something.

3) Thank the boyfriend for being thoughtful, then gently explain how important your eating plan is to you and how hard it is when he puts this kind of food before you, and tell him that you really appreciate the gesture and how it would have been even more special if it had been a lovely platter of fresh sliced fruits and vegetables and yummy whole-grain bread or Ryvita with a savoury lowfat dip or spread, because that would show that he respects your choices.

Oh, and no, I am very lucky that my DH neither sabotages me nor appoints himself my personal branch of the food police. I admit I got a keeper!!

Why did you skip lunch?  Skipping meals is a big no-no!  Drops the blood sugar too much, triggers the 'starvation' response in the body, binge eating, etc.  Next time, bring along a healthy meal or snacks to nosh on.  I can't imagine the mood I'd be in if I hadn't eaten all day.

No one can sabotage a diet if you don't allow them to.  If you were full up on crudites and home-made humous or white bean dip, fruit, home-baked low fat muffins (substitute applesauce for oil), a healthy sandwich, etc., those crisps and guac wouldn't have loooked so appealing.  Try making your own crisps by baking chipatis brushed with olive oil in the oven.

Try a more well-rounded breakfast - porridge/oatmeal with an egg-white omlette, yogurt w/muesli, etc.

DH is kinda food police lite, but 'sokay.  The best thing is he makes me get my boots on & go on long, sometimes pretty challenging (for me), walks.  I get hurty but I've also lost 40 pounds in the year & half since I moved here -- and I've not really & truly been dieting -- it's mostly due to increased physical exertion.  (or is that exhaustion?  LOL)

I didn't eat all day because we decided yesterday morning to head off to bloody Legoland as the sun was out. We did not have time to whip up anything with a 90 minute drive to get there. Plus neither of us were enamoured with lugging a backpack of food around that massive place all day. I am actually missing the good ol days of having a stroller to use as a luggage trolley.

Id like to see anyone find a piece of fruit for sale at Legoland! ::)  I did find a Cinnabon outlet, hot dog stand, icecream and popcorn stands and fish and chips. Faced with that, I chose to abstain from everything rather than gorge on crap. Luckily that food doesn't appeal to me so it wasn't hard.  However, the bowl of tortilla chips was another matter... >:(  I will be cross if it affects Wednesday, but then i've just returned from a 7 mile run so hope that will help a bit. And it's back onto the water, fruit and salad today.

On a happier note, I looked very un-fat on these rollercoaster photos that they take as you fly by - so much that I paid the ridiculous price for a fridge magnet ;D

I agree that it is very hard to find healthy food at amusement-type places.  Many people bring bag lunches.  I think it's a good idea, and it will get your children used to healthy eating early in life.  (What would you do if they had diabetes, food allergies, etc.?) It will also save you money, as the food they sell is not only unhealthy but also probably overpriced.

I know what you mean Hopster. When it's my husband's turn to "cook" we invariably end up having a pizza or a Chinese takeaway or something nice and healthy like that and sometimes he buys a dessert on his way home from work ... what am I supposed to do?? I'm not on a diet as such but I do try to limit my fat intake.

Yup - my bf loves junk food and all things unhealthy.  So I try to just watch my portion size.  He's good about that with me, though he sometimes forgets and puts half of whatever on my plate...I just tell him to take a bit more for himself.  It's tough...but I just have to keep reminding him to help me out...I love food as does he, and I don't care if he wants to eat it...just help me out to not overeat!

My BF definitely sabotages my attempt to eat healthy.  Although, he really doesn't mean to.  He has a really bad sweet tooth and grew up in a house that has "pudding" each night and boy is his mom good at making puddings.  Since he grew up with that, he thinks it's the norm and always has to have sweets after dinner.  I keep lollipops around, so that while he eats his yummy chocolately pudding, I can have a much lower calorie  sweet that lasts just as long.  Doesn't always work...

And to Hopster - Is this a REAL Cinnabon???  If so....it might just warrant a trip out to Legoland, unless anyone knows of another Cinnabon.

I think I do a good enough job of sabotaging my own diet.  ;D

Yes, there are Cinnabon here, although sprinkled throughout. I think they're in the London area mainly..

If you are in Windsor though, i'd recommend a quick jaunt to Legoland as the Cinnabon outlet is outside the park at the admission gates.

Husband eats like a horse. Plus he eats a ton of junk.  ::) He offers me bags of chips and chocolate whenever he eats them, and I take them almost all the time!! I wouldn't say he's sabotaging my diet, I'm sabotaging myself for constantly taking the junk he gives me  :P

I was once stupid enough to think that just because he doesn't get fat from all the stuf he eats ( eats soooooo much fatty stuff and junk, yet is extremely fit ) that it can't be too bad for me. Ah the idiocy.

I have since stopped trying to accept the food he offers me all the time. Thankfully I am still young and my metabolism is good. Also, I'm a vegetarian so I do eat lots and lots of healthy stuff.

I say sure, take some junk sometimes! No harm in some junk food here and there. Just don't always take it when it's offered to you, if you are worried about weight/health.

Nope, I won't let him! My DF and I almost always eat separate meals, because I'm a super healthy eater and he's not. We even have different milk (skimmed for me, whole for him.) He doesn't eat pure junk though, like crisps and chippy food, just meals that are ultra fattening, like burgers and sausages and his newest favorite, my homemade egg mcmuffins. The good thing about him is he drink ALOT of milk, which is probably why he's so tall. I do occasionally pick things off his plate, like his Birdseye chicken dippers (YUM!!!) but for the most part we steer clear of each other's meals.

Totally agree with you there. It's all about moderation. One day of eating a junky lunch or those tortilla chips shouldn't ruin a diet. Just don't binge...and then try to eat a healty breakfast/dinner. And exercise.

I saw a quote somewhere in this forum that keeps coming back to me. I can't remember the exact words, but it was something about getting to the grave in a body that's all used up and enjoyed rather than one that's perfectly preserved for the worms...that was what I took from it, anyway. ;)

I don't have a perfect body now and will never...I try to eat healthy 90% of the time, but I enjoy my fast food now and then. :)
