New UK citizen what do i have to do for NHS?
« on: September 27, 2005, 09:18:59 AM »
I just got my registration as a UK citizen last week, under the UKM deal.  I'm headed to London on Oct. 4th.  I don't currently have health insurance because i chose not to to COBRA from my last job.  If I need to see a doctor in London do I have to do anything to get coverage?  or can I just go with my passport?

You register with your GP.  It's that simple.

i'd bring your passport, but my surgery didn't want to see it or my visa letter.  just find the nearest surgery, or one that a family member/relative is using close by, walk in and ask to register.  it's best to do this b/f you actually get sick as it takes a short time for you to get a NHS number, etc...

I got an unexpected letter from NHS a few months after I entered on my fiance visa, ordering me to register with a GP.

just as an update... my aunt rang her GP and it is as simple as registering with a GP, but you have to be a resident for 60 days before you are eligible.

It might have been a little less than 60 days. I entered with my fiance visa for the first time on 12 Feb, I got the letter a few days after I moved her permanently, which was 7  April.
