Any Wino's around?
« on: October 03, 2005, 10:44:00 PM »
Merlot.  Help!!

Want to buy someone a good bottle of Merlot from the U.K to take to the U.S. She likes "Blackstone Merlot" if that helps and I have no clue about red wine at all.

I am going through Duty Free shortly and it would be nice to get her some from there, maybe something she couldn't easily get a hold of there, but where to start and what kind of price to pay? Any help appreciated!

Thanks ~ 'cos she'll be very grateful ;)

*is this kind of thing a good price or too cheap??

English wines are quite the thing now, and are certainly something that someone in America likely doesn't know about.  One of my degrees is in Vinticulture/Vinification (wine) so I HAVE to be a drunk ;D and tend to keep up with the latest wines.  If you are not STUCK on Duty Free, check these out.

I've had this one: Sharpham Beenleigh Red, it's a cab sav/ merlot blend.  It's a little more than those on the link you sent, but can I just say !!  YUMMY  !!

Frances, that is a great major! I've been wine tasting on three continents and have a couple of "intro to wine" classes and I know they just scratch the surface because I learn something new every time.

i had no idea about English wines! I like to blame that on the fact I am from CA  ;D  I will have to look for some to try.

I'm from WA, we beat out the CA wine hand over fist ;D

What we lack in quantity is certainly made up for in quality.

Wine is a great hobby for me, and one day I hope to make money at it.  In the mean time, I just happily drink the stuff.

LOL Frances, that is a cool degree! ;D

I am not stuck on Duty free and it doesn't really have to be a Merlot, in fact there is a vinery locally that I understand have won some awards, so I would prefer to actually get something there (Nyetimber), but it's difficult when one doesn't know their Cabernaut Sauvignons from their Pino Grigiots!  However, after a little light reading last night I do now know how a Merlot is produced ;)

Thanks!

Well, I will just have to add WA wine on my list too! I just learned VA makes wine too! Perhaps of tour of America's vineyards is called for!

Virginia does some excellent wines!  The Blue Ridge has lots of little lovely vinyards tucked away along its roads.

My favourite merlot is Fetzer Eagle Peak Merlot.  It's lovely.  And, thankfully, one can get it on either side of the puddle.
