Name change
« on: October 23, 2005, 07:19:15 PM »
If I get my spouse visa under my maiden name, how can I change it to my married name once in the UK?  Is this possible at all?  We wanted to wait till I legally changed my name in the US to apply for the visa under my married name but that would delay things.

There's no real need to have your spousal visa issued in your married name.  It'll be issued as "June Hawk Maiden, spouse of Mr. June Hawk Married".

You can always have your name amended on your passport at a later date.

Can't do this anymore. You have to apply for a new passport.

Thanks for the replies.  I just found out I can change my legal name from abroad so I'll do that from the UK and then we'll fly to the US for the visa and to change the name on my driver's license which the DMV insists must be done in person.  So I'll be entering the UK as a tourist and be there for a couple months before we come back to  US for the visa.  That works out nicely.

So now you can no longer go to the US Embassy and have your married name placed in the back (near your visa)? ??? I was planning on going to the Embassy and having my married name placed in the back before applying for my ILR (residency). Wanted to keep my original name because when my daughter comes over she and I would have the same last name on passports (make it easier at border-crossings). If this is the case, I will just keep my passport as is.

Bummer.

They quit doing it about a month ago. If your passport is less than a year old though, you can get a new one in your married name for free. Otherwise, you have to pay for it. Yes, it is a bummer. My passport is less than a year old but only for another 2 weeks and I can't go without it right now as I'm in middle of trying to find a job and we're looking for a new place to live.
