Anyone have a granary bread recipe?
« on: October 24, 2005, 02:42:17 PM »
I've started buying granary bread since it has a lower GI than wholemeal.  Problem is I don't like paying over ₤1 for a loaf.
Anyone have a recipe to share? I love to bake bread-makes the house smell so good!  Plus I can get my frustrations out while kneading.

No, but i have an awesome recipe for Dr. Pepper bread!!! I love to bake bread too, I love the whole kneading and rising process. .....and waiting....do you have a breadmaker? I prefer the old fashioned way, although I've done it both ways.

Nope, no bread maker.  In the states I had a kitchen aid mixer.  I used that to mix and partially knead the dough.

OK, what is Dr Pepper bread!?

Sorry, I don't have any recipes for you for granary, though my MIL has said she made whole meal and added a bunch of seeds to it.  Sorry I can't help more.

Thanks Stacey for that idea.  I made a loaf of wholemeal recently(so I have the flour and yeast already) and have a bag of seeds that need using up.
Is the Dr. Pepper bread more like a cake or bread?

It's actually called brown derby cheese bread, as it's got cheese in it, but it's regular bread, not cake, and the Dr. Pepper is used to dissolve the yeast, instead of water. It's really delicious, I'll post the recipe in the recipe section if anybody wants it. Also, it makes two regular size loaves.

This was the first time I'd ever baked bread, the old-fashioned way, and it's really easy, if I didn't screw it up, then it would be hard for someone else to!!

Problem solved!
On the way back from taking the girls to Marwell Zoo I stopped in at Sainsburys.  While on my never ending quest for red stickers  :) I came across some granary flour  with a recipe.
The cheese bread sounds yummy!

It is yummy!! The first time I made it, I took a loaf to work, and everybody loved it. Then I made some for my sister and her son, and well, lets just say that dinner went out of the picture as we were munching on fresh warm bread. The Dr. Pepper cookbook that I have, has loads of recipes, all using Dr. Pepper as an ingredient. Everything from muffins to meat loaf.
