One thing I'd like to point out is that salaries are usually commensurate with cost of living. For example, when I worked for the New York State court, people in New York City got cost of living adjustments and got paid higher salaries than people with the same job titles, skills and experience living in other parts of the state. The company that I work for now pays higher salaries to people who live in London than people who live in other parts of the UK.  But a flat or house in London is a lot more expensive than elsewhere. I earn less money in York than I did in New York, but my 2-bedroom flat here costs less than my 1-bedroom apartment did in New York.
True, but I suppose what I was getting at is if you are looking for a certain type of job in a certain field you may not find such a job in these lower cost areas than the higher cost areas.  So it's all well and good to be paying less for things but you may not have the job you want in the first place to pay for the cheaper goods is what I'm trying to say.

Hello All,
Is 60K (in British Pounds) a good salary in London? Can a couple live well and travel on such a salary?

Thanks!!!

(I only wish I would be making £60k! Then I could live in the West End!)

glibnyc, from everything I've read on this thread and the research I've done, you and your partner will be fine on that income. There are numerous threads on the forum about cost of living. Just do a search and you should be able to find them.

that's going to vary from neighborhood to neighborhood glibnyc and what exactly you want from a place to live. have a look under the housing section of expat life and you can find websites to help you out.

That can vary but central London is not inexpensive. Depends on what you're looking for. Serviced flat, where in central London you're interested, etc. There are some really good web sites that can give you specific info about flats...many even post pictures.

UpMyStreet is a great site. It gives you info about the people that live in the area, the crime rate, etc. All you need is a postal code to check each area out. I took the post code from my office (SW London) and used that to check out housing near there.

CraigsList has a lot of places available. I find that many of them are in the West End or central London so that may be a good site for you.

Good luck!

EasyLondonAccomodation is another site that can give you info about each area of London. You can search several areas at once from here.

Wow, GlibNYC. Can I be your friend?  ;D

My wife and I combined do not make 60K Sterling...yet we still manage to live quite comfortably in a 1-bedroom flat in central London, dine out and travel quite frequently throughout the UK and continental Europe.  But we don't spend frivilously; we still do a lot of research for finding the best deals when shopping and traveling.
