Kentucky Anyone?
« on: October 29, 2005, 08:33:18 AM »
Hi Guys,
dh and I are going back to the states after 2yrs here, we've just not settled. We have numerous options, we could either go straight back to CA, where it is over inflated and expensive but I'm madly in love with CA, or we could do a detour to the bluegrass region of Kentucky, where we could buy our dream farm but we would have no family there. We have a 15 month old and I guess my question is, is Kentucky as beautiful as it is in the pictures? Has anyone been and what can you tell me about it, climate, lifestyle, etc...

TIA
Joanne

I use to live in Ky and my dad/his side of the family live there now. What part of KY were you wanting to go to?

LOL!! I'll trade....I CAN'T WAIT to come back to M'cr.  But I'm living at home at the moment (just found out my roommate was a bit pshyco last week) so you'd have to put up w/my grandparents, mom, sister, uncle, three dogs, and a cat.  :P

What brought me to Manchester? I've been three times in two years. The first time I came over on a mission trip for two weeks, the second time I came for a month to visit my (now ex) boyfriend, and the third time I came on a BUNAC visa for six months just because I could. I lived in Dukinfield, Cheshire (tiny place between Ashton-under-Lyne and Hyde). But I worked in the city, which was a lot of fun.  Why are you in M'cr? Where are you from originally? What part of M'cr are you in?

Angie,
I was born and raised here in Manchester, at age 21 I met my now dh on a trip to California and stayed there for 15yrs. I've been back in Manchester since April 04 and I can't wait to get back to the states. I'm in a village called Boothstown in Worsley. What part of KY are you in??

Oops...forgot to write about KY.  ;D Anyways, my dad lives in Louisville, and all of his family is from Hazzard/Hindman (way up in the hills/middle of nowhere). I was born in KY. I think it's a lot like anywhere else you go...there are some good and some not so good places. My cousins there are mostly a bit red around the neck (to put it nicely) but I think that has to do more with how they were raised rather than where. It is a gorgeous place...and lots of farming in the country. What specifically were you wanting to know?

I am in Tennessee now, my parents split up, and my mom came here, and my dad's in KY.

Hi Angie,
actually we are torn between KY and TN. Which state do you prefer? And what are the summers like, are they hot and humid?? I don't do humid really well, don't mind a bit of it but not all of the time like FL and some other southern states.

It gets fairly hot/humid here in July/August. Right now the weather is crazy...in the morning it's in the upper 30's F, and by the afternoon it's in the 60's-upper 70'sF. I have more clothes and jackets in my car right now...I just layer in the morning...lol!   But it's not as bad as Floridia or Atlanta (Memphis is slightly more humid that Knoxville) I think KY is a bit cooler, as it's more north. I love Nashville. (my family use to live in a rual area near there) The Franklin/Belview area is my favorite....it looks like you are in the country, but in reality you are just a few minutes away from the mall...the best of both worlds! (note: these are the more expensive areas of N'ville)

I don't really like KY, but I think I that might just be because of some not-so-great family memories from there. The mountains are great, and if you're looking for a rual area to live in you won't have any problem in TN or KY!

Amen, sister!

(I haven't spent much time in Knoxville, but I would imagine the mountain air would not be as muggy as Memphis!)

Angie, are you in Knoxville? I'm not far from you (Hickory, NC). Knoxville is great. I almost moved there but had family in NC so came here. Memphis is too sub-tropical, weather sucks! (I'm from New Orleans.)

ukmis, Kentucky is beautiful, at least the parts I've seen (Lexington area). Will you be a farmer or seeking employment in town? That will be a big consideration.

Good luck!

I am in Knoxville! (nice city, but not much to do...would much rather be in London, Manchester, Miami, Atlanta, etc) Knoxville isn't on a mountain....it's more of a valley but surrounded by the Smokies! It does get a bit muggy here sometimes in the summer, but the mountains are only a short drive away, plus we have lots of lakes.

Hi Paula,
we are currently thinking the bluegrass region, somewhere between Perryville and Lexington. We are going to take a trip early next year to see what we think for ourselves. If we don't like it, then it's CA bound.

I grew up in Northern Kentucky and enjoyed it.  We were very near Cincinnati for any 'big city' stuff.  Lexington is so pretty!  I always wanted to live there....plus you are not far away from the mountains.  My Mom's family is from Eastern KY so I spent many a summer in the hills.  Wonderful people!
I think you will find that the living in KY is different than CA.  At least I did when I worked in Los Angeles for 2 months.
