Visa question?
« on: November 07, 2005, 06:10:40 PM »
This might be better off in the Visa section, I'm not sure...I'll see what you guys think first.

In a nutshell, this is my situation.  I just finished an MA in the UK last month.  Originally, my plan was to stay for my PhD - but the money situation didn't work out (as it does).  So I decided to come back to the US and teach for a year or two, then go back and do my PhD.  Problem is - the school I was to teach at is/was in New Orleans.  Ain't gonna happen now.  SO, new plan, stay here in New York at my parent's house for a year, save money, and go back for my PhD in September, supplimentling with loans if I have to (what's a little more debt?)

This is my question - my student visa is still good through the end of February 2006.  Do I (a) apply to get it extended, or (b) just apply for a new one in September?  I more than likely won't be heading to the UK to live again until September.  Which would be easier?

You need to apply for a new one.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Yep, that's what I figured, Kristi.  I thought it might be easier if I could just extend the already-existing one - but it will actually probably work out cheaper getting a new one.

Thanks.  :)
