Shipping gifts, UK-US
« on: November 14, 2005, 10:05:17 PM »
Okay, so my 21st birthday is in 2 weeks and a few days (yay!) and my boyfriend has a gift he'd like to send over (I've no idea what it is, of course!)  He wasn't quite sure how to go about sending it in the post, though, so I said I'd ask you guys for him.

He'd like to know:
1) What the best service is to get it here on time, with a tracking system (I was thinking UPS, but I'm not sure how all that works in the UK.)  He doesn't want to pay out the nose for overnight, and wants to know if there's any reasonably priced service with transit times of about a week or so.

2) How best to go about packaging it- I know with UPS/FedEx here you can use their packaging at the post office- would it be the same over there, or will he have to buy his own packaging and do it up himself?

3) Customs duties- he's assured me that my gift isn't over the top-expensive, so I'm not anticipating having to pay tax on it...but is there like a specific $/£ amount in value that you can send over before having to pay?

We're both clueless when it comes to sending things that aren't just cards or letters overseas, so we'd appreciate any help you could give!

Rose,

His best bet would be to wrap and pack it himself (depending on the fragility of course) w/bubblewrap - available from the P.Office/WhS etc and a sturdy box and take it to the P.O and use Parcel Force service.

It's a fully trackable service and can be insured dependent on the value of the gift.

I always used the service from the U.K and never had anything go wrong with it.

Hope that helps and Happy 21st!
