Who else?
« on: November 28, 2005, 10:06:42 PM »
Just cannot get his/her head round baking in the metric system?

I LOVE to bake.  I'm on a cookie and truffle making frenzy in the run up to having this baby.

But I just HATE kitchen scales.  I really, really do.  So I make everything out of my baking Bible:  a Southern Living cookbook from 1995.

Anyone with me here?

It's just one thing I'll never be able to take - measurng out all those friggin' grams!

I have an late 60's or early 70's Betty Crocker cookbook.  If there's a recipe in that, I'll go straight for it rather than use a British recipe in metrics.

I love the accuracy of metric and the easy division when you want to reduce or increase recipe amounts.

I find that for baking -weighing things whether in ounces or grams is wonderful and creates less dirty dishes as my scale zeros out after each addition.

What I HATE is conversions.  I just like to work in either metric or US/UK non-metric.  I loathe having to remind myself how much is in a US stick of butter and then convert that to weight either in oz or gr.

Best kitchen stuff I have is my set of cups that have the metric equiv on them, and the tbsps and tsps that have it too, and the liquid measuring cups too. I would go nuts other wise. And I have scale and temp conversion websites bookmarked that get a lot of use, esp around the holidays!

Since my cookbooks are on the bottom level and the computer on the top level I just photocopied an oven conversion chart.  I then have to still convert further as it is a fan assisted oven.

I am going to get a thermometer for the oven soon.

I don't like grams either, and never have had a kitchen scale, my measuring spoons are from the states, and I tend to go by ounces. My baking turns out well, so I'm not changing anything!

Hehe...got one of those ages ago and it's fab!  Takes all the guess work out!!

I am another who doesn't like this grams thing.  What I hate even more is when you go and buy an ingredient the weight is in metric.  I mean, what the heck is 425 grams when I want ounces???  Why or why can't it be like the US where they have both!!!

(Touched a raw nerve here, can you tell??)

My measuring cup has pints, ounces, and mils on it, and I bought it here, I use it for everything. It's actually called a mixing jug, but I use it for measuring.

Me too!!
I have a bad habit of just 'guestimating' my amounts. This is fine for cooking but not great for baking, though I have been pretty lucky so far.

I have loads of measuring cups, but oddly enough I have a cheapo (50p) that measures cups, pints, ML, FL OZ as well as separate measurements for grams and ounces of flour and sugar.

I thank god every time I bake for Delia Smith. If it wasn't for her book and her basic conversion table in the front of it, I'd be screwed.

But I have several measuring cups and spoons. Some I brought from the US, some I got here. Ikea has nice ones but they're in ml and all that crap.

What causes me anguish is not being sure that one ingredient is the same being asked for in American recipes. I've not been able to make a proper chocolate chip cookie since I moved here. They turn into cake or scones type thingys. I don't make cookies. I make cakies. It's really pissing me off.

could it be the baking powder? Seems like I read somewhere here, on another thread, that the baking powder here is different.
