Anybody here living in or close to Leicester?

Do you like it or loathe it?  Why?

What's the job market and rental situation like?  Public transport?

Inquiring minds want to know!  ;D

No one else has responded so I'll give it a stab!

Leicester is a small city/large town in the midlands of the UK - nothing particularly special about the place really, but I'm not from around there so could be stuff special about it!

It's a quite an old city, has many period buldings etc intermixed with the new and modern, mainly a working city as back in the days there was alot of factories and warehouses etc.

I'ts been a while since I've been there, used to go to visit friends who went to university there. Back then in 92-94ish it was seen as a vibrant, cool place, probably still is, and of course has developed since then.

As for your questions, I think you'll find it's a good place and worth considering if coming from abroad. nicely located, close by to birmingham and on the M1 so good transport links. I've read job adverts which say based in Leicester in various different fields so the newer industries that are there must need staff - job markets are very difficult to sum up on this board, I suggest having a look at government websites for stats on the area in terms of jobs etc. Hosuing - well, probably in line with the area that it is, certainly cheaper than London and the south east, but as alot of people from here look to move further north to get more value for money, places like leicester and nottingham, coventry etc which are the cities near to birmingham become more and more expensive.

Leicester has good nightlife, plenty of things to do and if not, you can jump on the motorway easily and go places.

Overall, I'd say look and research into the location in terms of your wants and needs and situation - it is worth keeping on a shortlist for the midlands area I'd say

Cheers for now!

Thank you, Dennis, I appreciate the info very much.  One of the big advantages to Leicester in my book was the relatively quick trip to London, 2 hours by train, I believe.

My DH went to university there, and didnt think much of it.   I visited him there once, and thought the pubs were shite, but there was a big covered market which was brilliant!

As long as you dont call it Lye-sester, or Lye-chester, like some Americans do!  ;)

I lived in the UK for 5 years before, so I'm safe from most of the mispronunciations.  I even know how to properly say Cholmondeley and Worcester and Derby.

Haha!
I remember coming out of a club in Leicester one time ages ago, drove from the centre back to Slough in 1hr 5 mins (give or take a few mins) at around 3am !

;)  yep, had to keep an eye out for the rozzers - but made it!!

otherwise you can drive to London in around 90 mins or so - depending on yer speed of course!
