So basically I will not be sleeping for the next few years, is this what you are all saying :P

Ahhh, the innocence of youth! Just when it's relatively safe to sleep, they go through the "nightmare years"...then adolescence...when they start dating...and driving...so, yeah, it's gonna be awhile!

Pretty much. ;)  I'm really looking forward to catching up on my sleep when he's fourteen and sleeps all day.

Right now Courtney sleeps in a moses basket beside our bed. Occasionally after a middle of the night feeding she won't settle unless shes being cuddled, so I bring her in the bed with us to settle her, sometimes I've fallen back to sleep while I'm cuddling her which I'm trying not to do now. She will sleep in her cot once she is either 6 months old or when shes too big for her moses basket. Judging by how much she eats, she will probably be too big for it once 6 months rolls around :P
And yes Stacey...you won't even know the definition of sleeping once your baby is born...You gotta suffer with me and expat :P

I wouldn't say "not sleep", but both my husband and I definitely became lighter sleepers when it came to our daughter.  We could sleep through a thunderstorm, but if she makes so much as a squeak in the other room, we are instantly awake.

CRAP!

(I really started something here didn't I!)

Funny, I don't think my mom sleeps now when I visit and go out with friends and don't come home till very late.  My poor mom, she is just like my grandmother and I am just like both of them!  My sister is the one who is going to be fine!

i'm not a mother and have very little experience with babies- but i do have loads of little sisters.  i don't remember any of them sleeping in with mom & dad ever.  is this moses basket, sleeping in parents room, a UK thing?

on the news this morning there was a report on a study in california- children who suck on pacifiers/dummies during sleep are 90% less likely to die of SIDS.  although, there was a side report from a UK agency that said that parents who usually use pacifiers, and then don't, the child is more likely to have problems on that particular night.

Yep.  There's the sleeping through the night.  Then just when they achieve that, they start teething.  Then it's cold and flu time b/c they start going to playgroups and whatnot and associated w/other kids (if they're the elder one, the younger one is destined for it from the get go).  Then there's potty training.  Then monsters and nightmares.

My dad used to come and wake my sister and me up at 7 as teens, who are nearly impossible to rouse from bed unless it's for an activity that directly benefits them.  As a joke.  He'd come in, bang on something (former Army sargeant) and yell, 'Up and at 'em!  Payback time!'

All five of my children have been "family bed" babies. I know most people have very strong feelings about this practice on both sides of the spectrum. All I can say is that it was a wonderful experience for all involved in my case.
Here is a link with some info about co-sleeping: http://www.bygpub.com/natural/family-bed.htm

Exactly! Having kids ranging in age from 5-21 (he will be 21 on Christmas Day) I can vouch that this is true! My husband keeps teasing me that as soon as the twins hit that golden age of about 7-14 when you do manage to sleep quite well with minor interruptions, the grandchildren will start arriving (and being babysat) so I may never sleep well again.

Niall slept in a moses basket in his crib which was next to our bed.  After the first month or so, he started to sleep in the crib without the basket.  He stayed in our room until he was over two years old, but that was primarily due to lack of space.

Same here Alex was in a moses basket beside our bed as was Rhiannon. When they are so tiny you worry about them so much! I used to even reach out and make sure they were breathing as sometimes they would lie so incredibly still.  ::)

No, not just a UK thing.  I think it's something that is growing in popularity in the US as well.  A lot more people are co-sleeping (baby in bed with them), but many more at least have the baby sleep in their room in a bassinet or Moses basket, for at least for the first few months.

is there any danger of crushing the baby or he/she rolling out of the bed? alien concept to me.

depends.

Our bed is too small for it.  And, personally, I don't feel comfortable with it.  Nor is my husband.  But others are.

Recent studies regarding SIDS, however, don't recommend it:
