Help a mother out! Digital download question.
« on: December 10, 2005, 09:51:29 AM »
Is there anywhere that I can buy credit over the counter for downloading music for an MP3player?  And an Ipod mini?

I bought credit for Napster over the counter at PC World.  Give 'em a call?

Thanks Twisted. :)  So do I want a membership?  Or just songs?

Thank you!  I know this stuff sounds simple, but I know nothing and I want to do it without quizzing the kids. ;)

So it sounds like I can do it for both the ipod and the MP3 player at PCWorld.  That's super.

PC World sells a range of gift vouchers for various things; just don't be put off if you search their website and can't find any information.  For some reason they don't seem to mention vouchers on there at all.

I can only tell you what I know about Napster which might be different than  Itunes or whatnot.  With Napster a membership is mandatory. From there users can either stick with just listening to music from Napster (but not downloading to their computer), downloading to their computer, or being able to download to an MP3 player. Each type of membership has different fees and if downloading onto an MP3 player from Napster, the user must have a compatible player. I think it's a little bit of a rip, really, and have been thinking of switching to Itunes.

I'm sure if you ask around at PC  World you'll (eventually) find someone who's willing to help ;)

Best of luck!!!

Also, iTunes doesn't work for all MP3 players. And, Napster isn't compatible with iPods. You'd have to download the music, burn it to a CD, import it to iTunes, then put it on your iPod.

I don't use any of them so I probably won't be much help but I'm sure you can find someone who knows what's compatible with what.

I understand this is a late posting,

For Christmas I purchased my wife a 60GB Video I-Pod and hate to pay up to .99p each for music downloads when the artists are paid very well already.
So I spoke to my IT support colleague in the states and he told me about this fantastic free program called "Limewire". www.limewire.com
I know file sharing and free MP3's are illegal, but - it is a really great way to download just about anything.

Hope this helps, as I tell my wife "Use it in moderation" and store the music on something other than your pc.

Take care.

Be careful with Limewire though! Lots of viruses and other nasties imbedded!

I agree,
Potentially there is allsorts of 'rubbish' that can be downloaded. You may think you're downloading Janet Jacksons latest album, but as soon as the file arrives on your it may be something else completely, or worst case scenario a virus or trojan etc.

I occasionally use Limewire, cautiously - I'm a IT bod and have some excellent security setup on my internet connection/laptops etc so even if I do get a 'nasty' I can usually be rid of it quite easily.

Another method *cough* is to find someone (me me!!) to share their collection (for a small fee!) which is 100% known to be music files and nothing else!!!

;)

Cheers for now!

Doesn't "sharing" become "selling" when it involves a "small fee" ? Just askin'!  ;D :-X

Also, iTunes doesn't work for all MP3 players.

Do you know if iTunes is compatible with Creative Zen players?

I think you have to burn the stuff onto a cd and then take it from there to the Creative Zen...it's just more work.
