Marrying in US at JOTP
« on: January 04, 2006, 04:19:24 AM »
Hello,

I am wondering for those of you who didn't have a lot of time to plan a wedding, esp those going to the US to get married through a JOTP or similar situation...how did you all do it?

We are considering getting married in May, about 2 years or more sooner than originally intended (its looking like marriage is the only way to be together) and it would be my dbfs first and only wedding.. I know he says we can have a 'proper' ceremony later...but I feel so bad..and I am bummed myself but in the end the fact that wed be together is whats important.

Not to mention we'd have like, very little money for a wedding. And how would we get witnesses if no one we know is around? I really wish we could have the wedding we wanted. I know we will later, but I just hate that this is how we have to do it. *sighs* Anyone know of any really good deals for airfare in the US so we could go someplace nice at least?

We got married at an historic inn in my hometown by a JOTP...it was so charming! Are you saying that you do not want to go back to your hometown where you (probably) have family and/or friends for witnesses? You do have to apply for a license in person ahead of time, which differs from state to state, and then will need the marriage certificate for your visa interview. In my small town in Maine it was ready to pick up the next day...then we left for New York for my visa interview the following day!

Good luck with your decisions! Being together is what really counts.  :)

Yes, I am one of the odd ones that would prefer to not have family around if I can help it....I have strained relationships with them at best, although Id like to think I was close to some of them, thats just when I get stabbed in the back, and Im tired of them walking all over me..but Im going WAY off topic here...

We were thinking NYC or Chicago, since one is close to home the other is on the way out of the country, both with consulates that handle spouse visas ;) Both places have a 24 hour waiting period and as far as I know we can pick it up right then. Our main problem now is gettng my divorce from my ex :(

Your state of residence is what determines which consulate you can use.  Look on the usabritain.come website for consular information and which one to apply to.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Is it true that it depends on what state you live in as to which consular you go to?

What if you are living in the UK and you are going to a JOTP to get married in New York.

I want to do this and postpone a big ceremony until the time is right.  We want to make it very low-key as it is not really the way we have planned things and want to do it right when the time is right.

So, if I go to NY, to get hitched and I don't have a permenant address in US, I can't go to the NY consulate?  I don't understand how this should work.

Yes, this is true.  The address on your visa application determines which consulate you apply to.   Since you're living in the UK, what visa are you on currently?  If you're on a work permit or something similar, you should be able to apply for FLR from within the UK after you're married as long as your visa is still valid (that makes sense to me but I'm not 100% certain, so you should find out for sure.)  If you don't have a visa to live in the UK (ie visitor) that's where things could get a little tricky....you'll need an address in the US somewhere (parents or friends, maybe?)

thanks, I just posted similar thread in kind of a panic.

So, I have been on a short-term work visa, but it's out at end of month.  I was living in San Fran, but family is from Minnesota, so should I go to Chicago to get hitched or maybe Las Vegas and go to LA consulate? I take it NY is out since I don't have relatives or friends there.

This is good information to know.
