Further to my posting immediately above:  I came across an article in a magazine about the American Women's Club of London, url:

http://www.awclondon.org/

Unfortunately their server was so slow when I looked I couldn't find out what their arrangements for Thanksgiving were (perhaps because it was being hit hard by other Thanksgiving enquirers like me at this time of the year!)  In any case it might be too late to apply for this year.  But they are possibly worth bearing in mind for Christmas and New Year activities, and all-the-year-round American socializing.  Here's what their site says:

"Founded in 1899 as the "Society of American Women," the American Women's Club of London has for over 100 years provided a welcoming atmosphere to expatriates living in London. The purpose of the American Women's Club of London is to provide social, cultural, educational and philanthropic activities for our members living in London.

"We welcome all US citizens as well as persons with close ties to the United States. We look forward to welcoming you as a New Member and helping you settle in to your new home city. London is full of wonderful opportunities for the American expat and we can help you get settled in, meet new friends and explore all the possibilities!

"The American Women's Club of London is a founding member of the Federation of American Women's Club Overseas (FAWCO) and is a member of the Federation of International Women's Associations in London (FIWAL). "

There seem to be lots of regional American Women's Clubs for non-London expats, as well - just go a-Googling for them!

Do hope this helps.
