Introducing Howard
« on: November 13, 2003, 07:03:58 PM »
Hiya, cousin Americans and Fellow Brits! (yes, I know "hiya" amuses Americans!)

Please may I introduce myself?

I am Howard, English, born in Mexico City. Spent most of early life as an expat Briton in various parts of the world, so know what it feels like to live away from "home", and - I hope - it has enabled me to be reasonably objective about my own countrymen.

Was educated at Lancing College and Oxford. Pursued a career in librarianship, in IT, and most recently as a web site designer.  Am married to Joss who is also English.  We have one child, Julia, who is currently reading history at Sheffield University.

Over the years I have had many excellent friendships with Americans, and if via this forum I can do anything to help their compatriots resident here, I shall consider it a small way of repaying the kindness of those good and dear friends.

With best wishes to you all.

Hiya Howard, Welcome to the site.  Yes Hiya does amuse me.  But I don't say it as much as write it.  I'm not sure I get the right inflection in my voice.  Guess I need to practice.  It's great to meet you.  We can always use another opinion on the boards since we are all individuals with such interesting life experiences.

Hi Kizmet!

Thank you so much for your kind welcome.  I was very nervous about posting, being a newbie at this thing, and a Brit amongst Americans as well!  I felt sure I would get kicked off the forum for being yet another Limey!  But having lurked here for some months I know what a big-hearted gang you are, and your kind message has totally reassured me.

Byeeee! (I hope that makes you smile too! We don't use "Pip-Pip" much nowadays, at least not more than once a "fortnight"!!!! )

My brother Andrew always asks David, my English husband, to say "Cheerio, pip pip!" every time he sees him. ;)
And welcome! :)

Good Heavens!  I've just noticed I've misspelled the thread subject. And there you all were thinking that it was yet another strange Brit spelling or expression!  No, put it down to my extreme nervousness about my first posting, and the fact that I am a two-finger-scan-keyboard-and-stab typist. Perhaps now I really shall get thrown off the forum, for careless typing!

Does anyone know a way of correcting it?  Or shall I have to go humbly to one of the Web Mommies (as I like to think of them, our kindly moderators) and ask her to correct it?

Huge thanks, all, for your most welcome welcomes!

Sorry Howard...I have no idea how to fix it. I tried to but it didn't quite work. :-/

But don't worry about it. If people got run off the forum for making mistakes or misspelling words none of us would still be here. :P

Oh, Bless, Melissa! Thank you for trying.  [See Favourite Brit Speak thread for "Oh,Bless!"]

My subject line will just have to stay there screaming my incompetence for all to see, and I shall have to keep my head down and hope that the Web Mommies don't do a sudden spelling check raid; or if they do, that they will be indulgent to me as a teeny-tiny one-day-old baby forum newbie!!! [There ought to be a smiley for Brit-style irony+whimsicality, but I don't see one!  But perhaps this one will do: ;) ]

Again, thank you.

Fixed it!  I didn't change all the replies, but fixed the main one so it comes up correct.  Welcome aboard Howard!

Many thanks, Elle, for sorting that out for me.  Now I shan't be branded a prat for all time - at least not for that reason.

And wotcha, Britwife, me ol' china!  "Ttfn" - ah yes, indeed! That may get our Transatlantic cousins guessing!  I wonder also if they have come across those other endearing abbreviations that servicemen used to use at the end of their letters home, like "Swalk", "Norwich" and "Burma" ?!!

Toodlepip!

Dear Lady Rhiannon,

What a lovely thing to say!  I appreciate it very much indeed.  And I love your "English In Heart&Soul", though fear we rarely if ever deserve such a noble compliment.

May Arianrhod protect you and bring you safely to these misty shores again soon! (Yes, I have done some homework!)

You take care, now!

Howard

Hi there Howard!  Jus thought to add my late welcome to you.

Don't worry about misspellings as many of us do them...not because we have no idea how to spell (okay some of us), but because we can't type.  I personally am I little of both.  ;D

Regardless...I look forward to your posts and input.
