I am so Overwhelmed!!!
« on: January 28, 2006, 06:31:25 PM »
I'm sitting in the middle of a big mess in my apartment. I just don't know what to do with all of my stuff. I have to be out of my apartment on Feb 23. Last month we put all of our big furniture in storage. We are shipping some boxes via USPS and I guess I will just have to throw away the rest of our things because we have no where to store them. I'm having hard time trying to figure out what to send and what to trash. It seems like this should be so easy, but I'm practically in tears. I can't figure out these custom forms. I just want to give up and crawl in bed, but I have got to get this done......only a few weeks left. Thanks for letting me vent.

i completely understand how you feel.  I just shipped my 24 boxes on monday.  Trying to figure out what you need to bring, what you shouldnt bring is painful!  I just talked myself down everytime I felt overwhelmed, and made piles of what I was packing, selling or giving away.  Now the packing part is over, Im dealing with selling stuff.  I leave in a month and I feel extremely FRAZZLED!   [smiley=sa3.gif]

The custom forms should be to bad, just mark that everything is used household goods.
hang in there, it gets easier.. :)

ps venting is good!  Id love to have a punching bag for therapy!!!!  ;D

Thanks Jenn. I stepped away for a bit and called Josh. He made me feel better. I am about to start sorting and packing again. I'm leaving March 3rd. I'm sure I will have a few more breakdowns before then.  :)

How about making mini-lists of what you want to accomplish each day. Then when you tick off everything on your list, sit down and relax and don't even think about it again until the next day. I know it's easier said than done, but I'm an inveterate list-maker and I always find it helps. Just the mere ticking off of things makes me feel like I'm making real progress.

Good luck to you!

Just remember to put on the custom forms - previously owned personal items...that way you don't have to worry about VAT.

Kim, I'm so sorry that you are having a tough time. I understand perfectly (as I sit here, staring at the piles of accumulated carp all over my house!). Family and friends just don't get that it's so hard to decide what to take and what to get rid of...it's permanent, once it's gone, it's gone! And, what do I do with some of my daughter's baby things I've been hauling around for 25 years? I want to keep them for her children but don't want to pay storage indefinitely.... ???

We'll both get through this, meet up for tea at the Ritz in March and laugh about all of these trials...I'm sure....I'm pretty sure... :-\\\\

Sunnyflower, take a deep breath and try to relax.  These are just THINGS.  Once you move, you will see that when you unpack, you will think "Why the heck did I cart this all this way.."  A good rule of thumb, if it doesn't have extreme sentimental value, then don't bother, you won't miss it.  And if you really need something you got rid of, you can replace it when you get here.  Moving is just a check list and once you go down the list, it becomes less and less overwhelming.  Also, think of it as a chance to purge.  I know that you are probably thinking that you need to hang on to everything  as a connection to your old life, which makes it even worse.

Moving is just plain overwhelming but try to focus what is really important.  You will get through this! and come out better on the other end.   what doesn't kill you makes you stronger..  And moving thus far, hasn't killed me (and this was my 5th major move!)

best wishes sunnyflower!

I sort of understand. my stuff is still in the guest room and garage at my sister's house. I just ran away, hee hee.  ;) sadly though, I did unload tons of stuff and somehow it seems to multiply!

But it is true, once you get here you you forget most of the silly stuff and you can buy anything common. Go to Salvation Army or Goodwill and donate the stuff you can't get rid of... can even get a receipt for a tax write off!

I donated a ton of my stuff to Big Sisters/Big Brothers (of Rhode Island). They actually come to your house to pick stuff up, which is awesome! In RI they had scheduled weekly runs to various neighbourhood, so I just checked which was my day.

Thanks for the info. I'll give them a call after my yard sale next weekend. I was wondering how I was going to get the leftovers to Habitat since I have already sold my car.  ???

Thank you to everyone for all of the well wishes! I have decided to donate a lot of stuff and throw away the junk that no one would want.

We'll both get through this, meet up for tea at the Ritz in March and laugh about all of these trials...I'm sure....I'm pretty sure... :-\\\\

Paula, I am really looking forward to tea!

These are just THINGS.

You are so right...once I started looking at them as things, it was easier to let go. I'm sure I will accumalate a ton of "things" in London and forget all about my old stuff.

Late to this but I am in the same boat ( piles of stuff everywhere) and it IS overwhelming at times. Sounds like you're back on track though! Hang in and remember you're not alone in this! We're here to support you! :)

Hmmm does anyone want a 28 year old, harvest gold electric knife....that I didn't even remember having....? But it still works!  :-[

Honestly, the carp I have found that I never use but have hauled around for thirty years is unbelievable!  [smiley=dizzy2.gif]
