Poll: Best phone cards for calling the UK or US!
« on: February 10, 2006, 04:03:24 AM »
I thought I'd ask what phone cards people use for calling the UK or US!  Please tell how much it charges per minute for a landline or mobile.  Also, which country are you calling! :)

To call the UK: I use a tel3.com phone card.  You dial an 800 number and it costs 3.5cents/min to call a landline. It automatically recharges, which is great!

In the US we use 1010987 before the number.  It's not a phone card though.  Just costs 0.59 to connect and 0.03 a minute after that.  I think we have a deal with Talk Talk here in the UK and our calls to the US are free on weekends and after a certain time at night too.

I use AOL's service (with a small monthly fee). Calls to landlines in the UK are free all the time, and calls to the US are always 2p per minute.

In New York, I bought a phone card called unique.  For $10 you get 14 hours of talk time!

Here the best card I've found is called America First.  I don't know exactly how much time, but a lot!  I have only been able to find that one in London.

I've found that either US/UK the best place is to go to a foreign deli as they call home and are thus very knowledgeable about the best deals.

Hiya!

For me, Calling the USA - I use Swiftcall. You Pay £19.99 a month and all calls to the USA, Canada and if you're on the Euro package, 20 or so European countries are included! limited to 75 minutes per call then you just hang up and redial! this is anytime, evening or day and weekends. Total per month = that £19.99 to swiftcall and £10 to BT for line rental. The swiftcall package also includes anytime access to UK numbers beginning 01 or 02.  Can use the service from a Mobile as well! Overall, quality is excellent, and a brilliant way to 'fix' your telephone costs for budgeting purposes.

downsides - have to call an 0800 (free) access number then type in a PIN then dial the number you want. Also, frequent emails telling you not to give the details out to anyone else and also a call from their team if they think you're using it wayyyy wayy too much and then they want you to pay extra for another service. If you keep to a 'good level' of use, you'll be ok, and of course, as ever, they won't tell you what that 'limit' or 'level' is before they think you should go onto a higher package

I call mainly the USA, Canada sometimes, my cousins in Holland and Germany and we use another service by OneTel to call relatives back in India.

Calling from the USA - 1010987, Skype. - The US telecoms industry has played alot of catchup recently and in some ways is better than the UK. I remember seeing a cell/mobile deal from T mobile which had unlimited calling within the US for around $75 a month! I thought that was a good deal!

I need to ask all my USA relatives and friends if there's any other deals or cards or plans that are good!

Cheers!

In the US - we have switched to Lingo - $20 per month all local, long distance calls, Canadian, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Luxembourg, Vatican City, Norway, Portugal, and Spain. Might be useful for your US relatives, Friends and LDR's  :)

There are no extra costs and no limit to how long your call is or how often - as long as it is a home use line - and you can use the internet connection at the same time as making a call.

This is VOIP - Voice over internet - So the only extra charge you pay is to your cable provider of internet. Maybe they have the same deal in the UK but I would bet it costs double. We get the UK people to call - we see the number , they cut off the call and we call them back  ;D

Calling cards in the UK

http://cheapest-calling-cards.pushline.com/p/buy.php?curr=GBP - To buy calling cards online or

http://www.thephonecardsite.com/search.aspx?CountryFrom=13&CountryTo=13. These cards change offers all the time so its worth checking these sites when you need a new card to see whats the best deal at the time.

My sister occasionally buys an America 1st calling card for 5 Brit pounds and gets one free in her area of London - St Johns Wood

Hope this helps!

Although i dont call the US half as often as I used to, I use a card called EuroCity, it comes in £5 cards, but i found a place that sells them for £3.50 each or 3 for £9.
I get about 5 hours call time with this card.
And seeing that the first 70 mins of all my landline calls 24/7 are free in the uk, i dial the 020 number so all i pay for is the card. I just hang up at the end and redial.

When Chris called me from the states he used this one also  1010987, When I called him I used and still do use Nomi call Africa and you get free calls after 9 pm and up till 9am English time so you save heaps and can stay on the phone forever and of course we did.  I used to get the £20 one that last I think for 3 or 4  months if you use it on the after 9 pm one and because I get free land line calls through a company called telewest the call's cost nothing at all bar I think 10pence or so for the initial connection to the states so its really value for money and we would spend anywhere between 2 and 10 hours a day talking on the phone and the internet and web cam and then of course the emails, but I prefer us being together as we are now and hope it will continue when we go back to get Chris's visa in April.

Now we call Chris's family using it and do not use it anywhere near as much.

The Nomi Africa card is worth the money.

When phoning the UK from the US, I recommend www.onesuite.com. It's 2 cents per minute. I've seriously not found anything cheaper.

And it turns out they do international dialling as well. You can phone the states from the UK for 9 cents per minute (although they say that can change, but it's still hella cheaper)

Wanted to add what I use to call the US.  I use Teledisount and I don't have any complaints.  It's only 1p per minute and No pre-payments - No account to open - No Extra Bills - No Credit Cards.  Here's the website address:

http://www.telediscount.co.uk/ [nofollow]

It's even 1p to call mobile phones.   ;D

I agree with Ashley on this one.  It was the best I found and no hidden fees or surchages. You use what you pay for!

I use whatever the cheapest card is from callingcards.com.  Currently, it's 2.2 cents a minute US to UK.

Two especially good things about this setup: I can go to the site and "refill" the card instantly. And, instead of a whole long string of numbers, I have a 3-digit PIN number of my choosing. For the latter, you have to be a known customer and you have to tell them the numbers you will be calling from (you can also use the card from another number, but then you DO have to use a whole long string of numbers).

We use 1899. It's a three pence connect fee, then one p per minute after that, anytime, for as long as you want. U.K. calls are free.

Maybe just have mommy brain but all of this is confusing ;) I looked through a couple of sites and theres so much talk about surcharges and what the phone company may charge or not, and the calling card sites dont say which ones are good to the US...

ca girl do you just dial 1899 then the us number?

I really would like to get something to call my son thats not extremely expensive, as a call to me from df cost him £10 on bt :( When we lived in our own house we had I think it was 3/p a minute phone calls to US, which was nice. Here though his parents dont call the US so they just have whatever international rates bt gave them.
