Sanibel & Captiva Islands
« on: February 20, 2006, 08:39:44 PM »
Has anyone been to the Sanibel & Captiva Islands in Florida?  We're considering going there as an option in April.  Does it get blazing hot or is it quite cool around 2nd week of April?
A friend of ours in England went there and said it was very different from the usual Florida experience they had (I think they used to go to Disney a lot).  Some websites make it look really tropical, white sandy beaches, etc.
Are the islands big?  Any particular differences between the 2 islands?

Thanks!
Matt

I've been several times in mid-March and it's been blazing hot then! Really lovely, though! And definitely not like the Florida people are used to -- which is A-OK in my book! ;)

That sounds good, belindaloo.  Btw, where haven't you been?  :D
I'm wondering how these places compare to the Keys both in climate and style.
We have some options as we'll be coming into Miami so really anywhere in southern Florida, maybe even
visit the Everglades.

LOL ;D

I actually haven't stayed on Sanibel or Captiva, but have done day trips from Fort Myers. I used to be a huge baseball fan, so would go down to Florida for Red Sox spring training every March. We'd always spend a few days on the beaches over on the islands, though -- they were never crowded or touristy! And the dolphins! Wow ... they'd be swimming literally feet away!

Been there, and it's beautiful. It will be hot there, but not unbearable. I personally prefer the Florida Keys. Islamorada to be exact. I love it there :) I highly recommend the Cheeca Lodge and Spa. We had one of the guys there take us out about 4 miles on a boat, and did a bit of diving. It is georgeous :)

Matt -- Based on averages, you're looking at overnight lows in the 60s (the lowest it would get) and daytime highs around 80-85.  It'll be humid but probably not as humid as it gets later on in the summer.  It generally doesn't rain as much that time of year as it does in the summer & fall.  But typical southern Florida rain means a heavy thundershower somewhere between 3-8 pm and clear/sunny before & after that.  I'm saying 'thumbs up' -- I think it'd be great beach time!  And you're right, there's a lot on the west coast of Florida that is nothing like the 'usual Florida experience' -- LOL.  (In all the time I lived there, I *never* went to Disneyland -- but I did go to two of the BEST natural (undeveloped) beaches in the whole of the US, according to Dr Beach.  And there was a dolphin there that nearly swam all the way into shore!  Snorkeling with the manatees in the river -- in the winter was pretty cool too.)

I miss 'my' Florida. ;)
