my name is george
« on: December 03, 2003, 02:59:19 AM »
Hello,

I came across this website whilst looking for places I can buy mountain dew for my american girlfriend.  (I ordered some from one of the websites in the links area).

Then I read some of the threads about life here and about the differences between american and english food, etc and found them to be very interesting.  I've made a point over the last two years with my girlfriend to find out about these differences in order to get her the things she needs to survive out here in England (like mexican food, large shopping malls with christmas decorations, pumpkins, pancake mix, and kraft dinner) and so I hope I can offer some help to people on the forums!

I am in a strange and unique position in that I am Canadian, American and British (got all 3 passports!).  Canadian by blood, born in Boston, and lived in England for 14 years so I have a very strange accent.

My favourite (with a u) thing I have found on this forum so far was that there exist some americans who have moved here and like the mature cheddar cheese! My girlfriend bless her cannot stand anything beyond fake cheeze-in-a-can or kraft singles because it "tastes like mould", so I am forced to mock her and her countrymen. It brings me hope to find some people like it! Maybe one day I will succeed and she will be eating Davidstow with the best of us :)

Well, thats all my rambling for now but I will be back soon no doubt.

-George

Hi George..welcome to UKY. :)

It's sweet of you to try to find all those things for your g/f. Sorry I have no idea where you can find Mountain Dew since I don't live there. :-/

It's funny you should mention the cheese because I was just telling Tony (my b/f) tonight that I can't stand that nasty fake cheese like Kraft slices and the stuff in the can. I prefer real cheese. :)

Welcome George and ditto on the cheese thing.  What the heck is that canned stuff?  Call me a food snob but I prefer non-processed stuff.

I hope that you are able to find some interesting posts here and I am glad you found some Mt. Dew.  It's an aquired taste..much like that squash stuff and Marmite. ;D

I hope that your girlfriend is adapting okay and we would love to see her around her too!

 Hiya George,and welcome to UKY.

Ditto 3 on the cheese [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] I will never understand why ppls want to eat things that are processed beyond recognization.

Bless you for caring about your g/f enough to try and find things like that for her.

When your roots are from more then one county, then I feel you have a very unique understanding of them all.

George, you married the wrong girl! Davidstow is lovely. But it's the ones who like Marmite to be the most concerned about.
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)
