Changing names on US Passport
« on: March 07, 2006, 04:08:29 PM »
Hi,

I am sure it is covered on here somewhere but I dont know where to start looking!

We have been married since November 04 but havnt got round to getting my passport name changed as yet. Can I get it done in the UK at all? How much does it cost and how long does it take?

If it helps at all, I came over on the 6 month fiancee visa, we married in November 04, my visa was then given the 2 year extension in January 05 which will then run out in January 07.

Actually a question regarding that as well, do you get informed of how to make the extension again...or is it up to us to start off proceedings?

Thanks for any help that can be given.

My brain cant process all the questions at this point but I will hopefully help with the passport part. You can get that changed through the American embassy, Im not sure how much it costs to get it done though. I didnt get my passport till oct 2005 and were getting married in July, so since I wont have had my passport over a year I can change for no fee, so unfortunatley I cant answer that part :(

Good luck, there are lots of others who can help :)

Pretty sure I read that as of last Sept/Oct you could no longer have your name changed in your passport. I never got around it and and just when I decided to take a day and go to London, I read on this site that they had discontinued the service. Guess we have to wait until it expires and get a new one.

If you've had your US passport less than a year you can have the name changed.  If it's over a year old, you have to apply for a whole new passport.  You kinda need to figure out if the money to get a new passport pays for the convienence of not having to carry your marriage certification, remember which name the tickets are booked in, etc...
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Before your current visa runs out, in Dec 2006, you can apply for ILR.

Just to clarify...you have to apply for a whole new passport to change your name no matter how old your previous passport is- however, if it's less than a year old you won't have to pay for it.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Thanks for the replies, may as well just carry the marriage certificate with it then instead of paying $67! Didn't have any problems when returning to the States for a visit in November.

Thanks also about applying for the ILR in December, will have to look into that so I am a bit more prepared come the time, it can all get a little bit confusing to say the least!
