'Time off'
« on: March 12, 2006, 09:34:06 AM »
Do you know anyone who has taken time off and traveled? If so where did they go and for how long?

If you were to take 6 weeks off and had a decent budget-but not overly insane....where would you go?

:)

Probably something rather boring and staid like travelling through Europe. Depending on the season: Northern Europe in Summer and Southern Europe in Winter. A coworker of mine recently got back from a trip to Poland and I'm seriously considering visiting during the Summer. Sounds beautiful and very, very cheap.  Maybe Northern Africa as well . . . Morocco in particular. I'd love to take short plane rides from one destination to the next instead of one huge, long, uncomfortable and costly trip. Scandinavia in the Summer is a two-thumbs up for me.

Are you planning something Aimiloo?
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

i think so....i've just spent a week with my best friend and she's convinced me david and i need to take some time off while our stuff gets shipped home next year.

just trying to figure out where.....how long....how much.  it will also affect our holiday this year as we will have to save more money and save up holiday days!

Funny, Rich has a sabbatical coming up in September.  Just in time to go visit my family.  We are also planning to do short trips around the US to see friends.  I have not been to a lot of States and Rich certainly has not, so we are going to do that.

What about Asia. There are so many places you can go and so many ways to travel. Luxury train, short cruises, etc.

If it were me, I'd go to one place and stay there for six weeks. I'm not sure where that would be, but I'd like to get to know one place really well!

You will probably get wildly different opinions from Americans vs. non-Americans.  It seems like most of my British co-workers who have taken anywhere from 2 months to 1 year off have gone to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Australia/NZ.  I think I might do some of South America/Latin America or maybe Africa as I have never been to those places.  But it probably depends what kind of trip you are aiming for - real backpacker sort of travel or nicer more luxurious travel.

geetak, that is kinda where we are thinking.

we can do so many european places later with our kids...i doubt i'd drag them around Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Australia/NZ......

Thoughts thus far: Fiji, maldives, thailand, china, japan......

6 weeks... i'd buy a round the world airline ticket and live it up.  they're pretty reasonable when you factor in the number of flights etc...

i'd say start in the UK, go to dubui on a layover, then go to australia, then new zealand, then singapore, then japan, then a quick stopover in the USA, then back to UK.

If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
