Travel in Italy
« on: March 13, 2006, 06:53:33 PM »
Hi all
Well, my sister has let me know that she will be traveling around Italy for 10 days. (in between visiting me for two weeks) She is a pretty savvy traveler, however I wanted to help her out a bit by giving her some tips. (I have not been since 1998, so a lot must have changed!)  Maybe best ways to get from city to city. (I know Rome, Venice, Cinque Terre and Florence for now) Some places to stay and eat.  She has two friends going with her as well.

A couple of summers ago we went to the island Lido off of Venice. It had a great beach and the only tourists were Italians. It wasn't expensive and it was really lovely. I highly recommend it.

I would assume train might be the best way to get around from city to city.  Siena is also a nice place to vist.

The trains in Italy are fantastic, and always on time!

This site http://www.raileurope.co.uk/inter-rail/zoneG.htm gives all details of Interailing across Europe.

And here http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html is the timetables.

I love Northern Italy, and once got the train from London to Como and back, via Paris and Switzerland.  I doubt much will have changed since 1998 to be honest.

Thanks all, she is traveling by train I know and has almost all hotels booked except for Cinque Terre, which I have never been too.  I'm trying to find out the dates she leaves and returns to the UK.  I'll be pming you MeShell when I do ;D

Victoria, how long did the train from London to Como take?

P, I will mention Lido to her, she loves stuff like that!

Thanks again.

Crikey, I can't remember.  We went the long route...train to Paris and a stopover, train to Basle and a stopover, then down to Milan and changing.
