Baking Dishes...Bring or not?
« on: March 16, 2006, 01:36:22 PM »
I have a set of vintage Pyrex baking dishes, nesting bowls, and custard cups, and I am thinking about shipping them over a week or two before my flight.  They are quite heavy, so it will be expensive but that doesn't bother me so much.  A dear friend of mine gave them to me, and I would love to have them there.  I want to be able to use them though.  Having been in a British flat before, I don't want to bring anything that will "just take up space"  ;)

Can anyone tell me if the glass bakeware does well in the ovens over there?

I use glass dishes I bought in the states all the time in my oven over here and they work fine.

Of course you can bring them if you want, but I don't see why you need to. You can get replacements here.

I use the traditional brown stoneware casseroles and like them just fine. :)

pack them very well if you ship!! I brought my favorite pieces and wish I'd brought some others (but couldn't justify the cost)  but what I left behind wasn't sentimental, just functional and I've replaced them here with like pieces.

She mentioned a dear friend gave them to her.

Yeah but I hate to rebuy all that stuff when it's just sitting in my parents' basement at home....

as much as I like pyrex cookware, I don't think I would bring the stuff I have here back home. It does boil down to the sentimental attachment rather to the £3 deal.

To me, this just depends on how long you are staying here. If you are moving here for work and expect it to be temporary then I might not bother, but if your relocation appears to be permanent, having your own things with you can actually be comforting if you are missing home a bit and really nice to have.

I have kitchen equipment I would bring everywhere I'd relocate temp or permanently. It is those small things that offer some comfort as pk mentioned.
