Maternity wedding gown- dont know how to deal with size!
« on: March 24, 2006, 12:26:33 AM »
Ok, I would still like to have the gown, and have found a couple from Hong Kong on ebay for really cheap. But my question is what do I do about ordering the size? My chest is growing as well as the bump, so Im worried I will outgrow it after I've gotten it!

Ive had someone suggest getting it a size or two larger and that way if my top half does grow that much before July Im fine, more, then I can still have it let out 1-2 sizes, and if its still big (Id hope so!) Id have another 1-2 sizes it could be taken in.

Anyone else had to do this? Is the overall length of the gown longer with larger sizes? I dont want it to be too long although I suppose thats easy to correct.

I wish I could try some on in the US, or even the UK, but it seems designers only want to design dresses for pregnant bridesmaids :( So my choices that arent waaay above my budget gives me just a couple of designs.

I don't know what price range you were looking for or what type of dress you wanted, but here is a maternity dress site in the UK.  You could just order the dress when your wedding gets closer.

You could try a dress with a corset back as you can cinch those of loosen them according to your size on the day.  I know lots of Maggie Sottero dresses have corset backs.

Depending on when you are getting married if you go to a bridal shop and get your dress the most flattering I have seen on woman who are expecting are those empress dress where it goes to the bust then drops down they look stunning but if you go to as I was saying a bridal shop chose the style you like they can alter it to fit you you will need to get something slightly bigger with my first wedding I found out I was 3 months pregnant the week before I got married I just thought I was getting fat LoL and my aunt kept telling me I needed to do  more sit ups and stomach exercises till I found I was expecting.

Good luck you will look great in what ever you have it is a special day for you and you have a special present waiting to be born so just enjoy your day.

I think the most flattering style and the easiest to deal with would be an empire waist, with the bottom being light, flowing, layered material like chiffon.

you might think you are saving money by buying a dress in the states before you move over, but you may end up spending loads more just getting it altered if you don't have someone you know do it for free or cheaply... plus it may not even fit at all later as you said.

give yourself a couple more months to judge how big you will get. the internet will be be at your fingertips then too.

There are some great places with beautiful dresses on the internet that will deliver from the states but they can take up to 4 months to get to you this was the longest one quoted if out of state.

Have you decided when you are getting married? as some places have sales on so you may be able to pick up a reasonably priced dress, Monsoon do some beautiful dresses and they are not to expensive but they are long (I am 5ft 1) so most dresses are LoL but have a look before you come over to the UK and take a family member with you so if you see anything that you love they can go get it and send it to you or make sure the shop is on the internet you can get them to send it and just look here when you arrive see if you can get anything better or nicer, I just got my dress from Phase Eight in Debenhams they have some beautiful gowns and dresses.

I think that all wedding dresses come long with the expectation that they will be altered to fit the bride's measurements.

from what I understand of wedding dresses its just like regular clothing in that a pregnant woman generally cant fit into a size w/o then ending up with everything else being way too big...hence why I am looking for a maternity gown specifically. I will be about 6 months along and probably pretty big by then, Id risk having too much of the rest of the dress altered if going with a normal gown.

I was thinking of going with an empire waistline as it does work best with a bump...

Flying it over or however else I might get it from the US is definitely someting I dont want to deal with.

While we dont have to go super low, the dresses I have seen that are in regular bridal stores are so expensive, too expensive to consider. I've had a very hard time finding maternity gowns (online) in the UK, maybe Im not looking in the right places?

Edited to say:

After looking I see that a few places offer custom measurements, Ive emailed one place where I had found the dress I wanted before I found out I was pg to see if they could work with me on it or if its just not possible. Im just worried custom=costly :( While I mentioned before I dont have to go ultra-cheap I also dont have tons of money to spend on it.

We'll be getting married in 4 months so for some places I've already gone past the dealine for custom orders :(

Theres a very pretty dress on motherhood but its lilac...I wasnt really wanting a lilac dress..its very nice but I just dont see purple going well on me. But if I run out of other options it may be what I get.

Many bridesmaid dresses are available in white or ivory nowadays.  They can be just as pretty as a bridal gown without breaking the bank.

Ive noticed that. Ive also started to consider an empire waist gown with georgette or something flowy and light as others suggested. With the waist starting just under my chest and being light and havng more room its conceivable to find a regular gown and get it altered. Id like to find one with an overlay thats split down the middle if that makes sense...

Now to just find someone to go with me as I do not drive over there alone! ;)

I can totally relate.  It was weird shopping for a wedding dress all by myself.  I didn't really know anyone who lived nearby.  (DH's family are all very far away.)  But the ladies in the shop were so nice, and they really took care of me.

What about those lovely empire waist summer dresses in the shops? They are not wedding gowns per se, but they are afforadble, white, and don't really need to be altered.

I used to work in a bridal shop (for a month). Here is an evil secret of the bridal industry...slap the word "bridal" or "wedding" on anything, and double or triple the price. Most people will pay it.  >:(

Good luck :)

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.
