taking pre-packaged goods home?
« on: March 26, 2006, 03:53:07 PM »
Is there any restriction on taking prepackaged groceries such as curry noodles and candy back into the States on the airplane?

If so, can they be shipped as a care package instead and what is entailed?

I've carried home all sorts of candy and yorkshire pudding mix and noodles and...I'm thinking of others as I type. So, yes. When asked if I have food, I say "yes, chocolates and tea and things" and they wave me through.

I read horror stories in the paper about how heavy it was going to the States during the foot and mouth thing. Like, they were going to search luggage for food and make you stand in a pail of disinfectant and stuff. Never happened; they just waved me through as always.

I have taken in stuff on trips about 10 yrs ago, from Ireland...but I had trouble going back from France in '98 and had heard some rules had changed.
I think one airline hostess told me not to claim it on the entry card but to tell them "sealed pre packaged dried goods" if they asked (which is what they are anyway).

anyone else?

I've never had a problem.  Even during the whole 'foot and mouth' crisis, although I was careful to check what was allowed since they had some additional restrictions in place during that time.  I usually list it as 'confectionery' or 'dried goods' on my customs card.
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

You shouldn't have a problem either bringing things with you or posting them separately. Stock up on that Cadbury's! ;D

My DH just brought somethings from the UK to the US with no problem.  They were all prepackaged goods.
