Moving from the US to the UK - how????
« on: April 03, 2006, 02:26:27 PM »
This is my first posting - so first of all hello to everyone!!

I and my husband are living in the STates - he's the USC.  We've been married for just over two years.  Anyway, we're "thinking" about us going to live in the UK, we haven't made up our minds yet and I dont have a clue how we would go about it.  I'd obviously have to be his sponser but how would I go about this??  I'm assuming that I'd have to go back first and get a job, a house etc etc??  Or is there a way we could go back together??

Can someone point me in the right direction??  A firm decision hasn't been made as there's so much we need to find out first and even then I'm not sure, at this stage, whether it would be the right move.

Can anyone help at all??

Are you a British citizen?

He just needs a spousal visa. Easy peasy.  :D

You will need to show that you have funds to support him and have somewhere to live, so unless you have savings or family to support you then you probably will need to to head here first.

Hmmm. I'm actually not sure but I'm sure someone will pipe in here soon. I do know that he'll be able to work right away on a spouse visa and showing his CV and proving his employability will probably go some way toward that.... I would think that if you could line up somewhere to live ahead of time it would help, but it doesn't seem like you should have to come over alone to set all of that up.

Garry and Victoria will be the ones with the right info! It should be quite easy for you though! Good luck!

Doh! Look at that, Victoria has been here already!

Once lara is able to show evidence of accommodation and sufficient funds, her spouse will be able to apply for his spousal visa in the US and begin working immediately.

Thank you so very much for your replies!!

OK .. what about this scenario ... next year I will have about eighteen thousand pounds sterling, there is a possibility that a family member could temporarily let us have a house to live in (with us obviously paying rent).  So really, all I'd need is a job ... I was doing secretarial work when I was there (legal work) and my husband has been working as a maintenance foreman with the same company for the past 18 years.. thing is, we're not exactly spring chickens - I'm 48 and he's 53 so I dont know how easy it would be for us to find employment.  He will retire from his job anyway next year (if he wants to that is) and will have a pension.  We'd be looking to move to Wales - not far from Swansea.

Sorry if I"m rambling on here!!  My brain is all fuzzy this morning!!

I think your application sounds good. The £18k certainly helps.

Well, we had a really good chat last night about moving to the UK, it's actully my US husband who has been wanting to move there for quite a while, he's been "hinting" at it for some time now.  There's a lot of things that we are going to have to sort out first though including a few debts that were left behind in the UK .... so, first things first:-

I can't even remember now what the debts were, how much for etc etc.  Where do I start in getting all this information so that I can repay anything that was left behind??  I want to pay off everything before we return which in all probability will be sometime during 2008 (we will have been married over four years at that stage).

Anyone???

I know UK credit works slightly differently, but if I was in that situation in regards to US debts I'd request a credit report - that would show the different creditors and any outstanding amounts.  Dunno if you could do that for the UK.

Do you really have no idea what the debts were?  I mean do you know it was credit card debt or installment plans on furniture or what?

Did you file for bankruptcy?  There would probably be a record of your debts at the time I'd guess.

THank you for your reply!!  WEll, what I'm going to do is once we are back in the UK, I will obtain a credit report to see exactly where I stand and then make arrangments to sort it all out.  I cant obtain a UK credit report now as Im not in the UK... anyway ... couple of more questions to come!!

In 2008 we will have been married for four years.  So what visa would we come in on?? Spousal??  Settlement?? the Indefinite Leave to REmain?  What are the benefits of the Indefinite Leave to Remain???  I've been trying to locate the forms that we would have to complete but I'm finding it really confusing.

You would fill out the VAF2 form.
