Bringing Mom
« on: April 05, 2006, 04:42:52 AM »
Hi everyone--

I am taking a faculty post at a UK university, and I have my work permit in hand.  I understand that my husband can work in the UK legally based on my having the work permit.  As we apply for entry clearance, I am wondering about our ability to get clearance for my mother, who lives with my husband and myself and who cares for our two-year-old daughter while we work.   There's no obvious clause or information specifically dealing with a case like this, as far as I can tell, on the visa websites.  We definitely consider my mom part of our immediate family and we depend upon her as integral to our ability to work.  Any insights on how I can manage the process of getting her clearance to come with us?

Thanks so much!

Hi, I'm sure someone on here can give you better advice but I remember reading something about being allowed to bring your domestic worker with you.  I don't know if that is a way around it but just thought I'd put it out there.  Good luck.

There is a category for dependent elderly relatives, but this is going to be subject to her being totally financially dependent on you.  Also, it looks as though people on temporary categories cannot sponsor parents, so it may not be possible anyway.

She could come as a visitor for six months but I don't see a way for her to get leave to enter for a longer period than this.

Additionally to Victoria's call, there's a pathway to bring in a carer, but it is specifically worded to prevent bringing a relative in to enable both of the couple to pursue careers.  It falls in to the category of 'chain migration', and they are trying to eliminate that entirely.

Ugh.  This is very bad.  Thanks for your responses.  I'm not sure we can make the UK move then...  Very disappointing...

Some larger universities have nursery/daycares on campus.  You do have to pay for them, but they're open for staff to use for childcare.

Not sure what your mom's age or financial circumstances are, but would it be possible that she could qualify as a 'retired person of independent means'?  I know of at least one person on this forum whose parents have qualified...

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Age 60+.  Lots of money.  Close connection to the UK.  Lots of money.

No, she doesn't have lots of money, for sure.  But, the NY consulate seems to think there might be some wiggle room on this one, so we'll see.  They've told me to apply for her as a dependent and provide as much info as possible.  I won't hold out much hope, but we have the means to ensure she's not going to be living off the UK gov.  Maybe they'll cut her a break...

Thanks so much everyone!
