FAQ tip: Detention
« on: April 20, 2006, 05:39:19 PM »

Of course it looks daft to put it here, but if you are coming to visit your bf/gf and you get taken into detention at Heathrow, it is not the end of the world.  But more to the point, trying to make a run for it will not work.  Even if you are scared and in panic, the best policy is to brass it out.  The whole place is secured - even if you can run past when they open the door, they will capture you and matters will be worse.

Of course nobody here would ever dream of such a thing  ::) , so this tip is just advisory only.

LOL... Thanks for the tip!  I'm feeling very deterred from the idea!   ;D

I'm sure if someone did do that they were probably very scared and possibly still are.  Personally, I would tend to have a lot of sympathy in such a situation, but that's just me, I suppose . . .
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

Yeah, but if you've ever seen 'Airline', a lot of those IOs were anything but sympathetic.

I'm sure not - and I'm also sure for good reason. But they're not posting on an expat forum board. ;)

Hmmm......great tip.  Up there with not saying you are going to work in bar and not bringing all your possessions including the kitchen sink when you come in as a visitor....

Victoria and Garry, you ought to write a Letterman-style Top Ten list of things not to say to an IO!

The thing is that the things to not do are so bloody obvious, I sometimes wonder whether the people who do them should be allowed out on their own, let alone be granted entry to a foreign country.....
