Sorry your back hurts.  Have you seen a doctor?  Chiropractor?  My relief would be drugs, so sorry Im not any help, but hope you feel better soon :)

Accupuncture followed up by stretching exercises (seek the help of a physio for exercises as you don't want to get into bad stretching exercises - you can get physio on the NHS-ask your GP)

There isn't a quick fix to persistant back pain.

In the short term I would use ibruprofen, if it was a persistant pain, then I will always try an accupuncturist.

Unfortunately it is not on the NHS (not that I am aware of anyway). But it is well worth it. I mentioned once before that I went to a osteopath or chiropractor on a yearly basis(sometimes more frequent), then I had 4 sessions of accupuncture and I have not had any back problems in over 5 years.
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

You might want to try alternating heat and ice on it. That's what my physical therapist/chiropractor used to do for me.

I hope you feel better soon.

I can't do ibuprofen for my backaches while pregnant, so I've been using a plug-in heating pad.  It is a temporary relief, at least!

Mine is killing me too, i've been doing some realy light stretching exercises, modified a bit to not cause any problems with baby, but it helps, also not laying/sitting in same position for too long.  I was not feeling very well on Saturday and layed about for too long, paid for it all day yesterday with a back ache.  I also found sleeping on a few extra pillows at night helped to support my back better and kept me from aching all the next day.

If it is your lower back, try doing a good hamstring stretch. Lower back pain can often be linked to very tight hamstrings. Feel better!!

I had the exact same thing earlier this year. It was sacroiliac pain (lower back), which then affects your hips and thighs because you sort of over-compensate for the pain. Not saying that I can diagnose you or anything, but it sounds very much like what I had. Nothing will cure it except time ... however, a good chiropractor or physio will at least help shorten the time it takes to get better. In my experience, a GP will do FA except give you tablets for the pain.

Be careful if you start getting shooting pains down your leg -- that could be sciatica.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

I second the heating pad idea, I use mine all the time. If you've not got one, an iron on low and wrapped in a bath-towel does the same trick. Also, deep heating rub, or tiger balm, or some of those heating patches that you stick on. What a bummer, I hate back aches!!

my back has been aching since I flew back from the states last weekend. First I thought it was just the heavy lifting and it would resolve itself but all week I was wiped out and in bed early and by Friday I was near tears and succumbed to hitting my colleagues up for drugs. I saw a chiropractor Saturday and he suggested a cold pack 3x a day... no heat, which I asked about, and stretching. Plus, NO crossing your legs and sit no more than 15 minutes. Also, look at how you sleep... on your side fetal position or recovery position (leg twisted over) on your back (use a pillow under your knees).

As much as I resisted drugs, I deperately needed an anti-inflammatory. The pharmacist at Boots recommended an ibuprofen gel which is right next to Deep Heat... I just didn't want to smell like menthol at work all day.  :P

speedy recovery!

What works best? I notice I tend to sleep in one position because it is too painful to move and it ends up hurting even worse when I need to get up.. :\\\'(

Ugh. Trying to be comfortable in bed was the worst when I had my back problem. I found that lying on my side with a pillow between my knees was OK -- it sort of aligns your hips properly and takes some pressure off the lower back.

YES sleeping is the worst and God forbid there is a fire or something I need to rush out of bed for.. It won't happen..   GP.. FA as  predicted..  UUGHH!!  just wait it out basically.. and no physio unless I develop sciatica.. I really can't get used to this reactive instead of proactive attitude.. I did do the ice packet last night and  that help some.. I'm trying the  others  soon.. Thank you again for all your help..
