Hmm, I've found that generally the prices are the same but in pounds.  So if I paid $3 for a bottle of shampoo in the US, it will probably be about £3 here (for the good stuff).  Sometimes Sainsburys or Tescos have a "buy-one-get-one" offer but generally I mostly find that on just shampoo for some odd reason.  Everything is more expensive in the UK, that's a given really.  I think a good rule of thumb though, just to generalise, is just to slap a £ sign on the prices in the US and that will probably be about what you'll pay in the UK.

Sounds like a plan but ... where are you going to store 6 months worth of all that stuff?  Most flats and houses here don't have that much storage space.  Also bringing in large quantities I think you might be liable for import duties, you might want to make sure your company will pay for that.   Plus a lot of it  is on special offer in one supermarket or another most of the time, you rarely need to pay full price.

I've paid 41 pence for Tesco's brand coke.....when I have a craving for soda that is. I agree with Britwife, it would be hard to store all that shopping. Once you get acclimatized here you stop comparing prices. Last time I was in the states, I went into a major grocery store just for about four or five things.....left my mom waiting for me in the car, I had a five dollar bill, thinking that would cover it.....I came out with only two or three of the things. It was far more expensive that I thought it would be. The only thing I really complain about the price of over here is yarn. It seems way more expensive than in the states.

With all the money you'll spend shipping it all over and possible duty fees your better off just buying it here

Besides, if you ship it all over, you won't have an excuse to visit for awhile!! ;D

My Idea is to buy for example 5 bottles of shampoo, 4 packs of razors, 6 Antiperspirants & Deodorants …etc.

I think its a good idea to stock up on little things. I know I do (buy several of each item) when I go back to the states for a visit.  I also stock up on clothes/shoes. I wouldn't stock up on soda (2 litre bottles), that's just too bulky. Also, the refrigerators over here are much smaller so you will notice that the 2 litre bottles are much thinner over here. The US version will take up a lot of room and may not even fit on the door (if you have a small frig) if you like to keep your chilled (I do). I am a diet coke junkie and the price doesn't bother me...I am going to buy it regardless. That said, a lot of folks to learn very quickly to stop the price comparing...some of us never stop doing it. Its best to try and not do it...although a lot of the time I can't help myself.

Best of luck on your move!

No offence mate, but...

I think that I am getting a good offer with £50,000 per annum, financial assistance to relocate of  £6,000 and benefit package of £972.47 per month torward (car + private medical insurance + vacation).

if you're getting that much money, you really can afford to buy shampoo, razors, deodorant, etc over here.   ;)

I did the same thing when I moved here!  My stuff was shipped for me via fiances company.  I stocked up on everything from cat food, shampoo, and boxed meals that I like (ie. hamburger helper).  I find things are more expensive here.  And a lot of brands that I like aren't sold here (ie. my cats dietary food).  Personally, I think you're doing yourself a favor by stocking up  :)

Oh I didn't realise that's how much you'll be getting. Oh yeah, forget shipping it, just buy it, apart from the things you can't get here.   You won't even notice the £1.20 for a bottle of coke when your take home pay will be about £2000 a month.   Bring 6 months worth of Mexican food instead.  ;D

that is what i did....though after i got here i realized there were a couple other things that i should have brought with me as well.

i also made sure to stock up on my favorite spices (not basics like basil, oregano, etc.) like cajun and mexican.  i actually made a whole list of foods that i wanted to bring with me like cake mix, frosting, koolaid, etc...but i ended up waiting until the last minute and i didn't have time to buy and pack all of it.  but now that i'm here, most of the stuff that was on my list i have found in the stores here....except for koolaid.

No doubt!  Or Nestle's Toll House Chocolate Chips, Crisco sticks, Jell-O everything, Seattle's Best coffee, Cholula, green Tabasco sauce, Bush's baked beans and Marshmallow Fluff.
