Single Mum, adoption and travel
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:10:19 AM »
Hi all!  We are getting closer to our July departure date!  E's (DS's) passport came yeesterday and it made me think.  E is adopted (trans-racially) by a single Mom (me!).  Am I going to have any trouble getting into the UK?  Should I also bring his birth cert with me on it and the adoption paperwork?
Thanks,
MIchele

Are you coming here for a holiday or are you moving here?

No, you shouldn't.  He is your child and will be considered as such both in the UK and the US.  Is his surname the same as yours?

Yes, his name is the same as mine and I'm listed on his birth cert.  We're moving over for a job.  The only reason that I'm wondering is that the passport lady gave me an AWFUL time about it.  I know that they are worried about child kidnapping but please she asked if I had "erased" the fathers name from his birth cert.  As though doing that would not leave a spot? (even if you could erase typing )

So are you on a work permit or something? And will be applying for a visa for your child before travelling? If so, anything like that will be ironed out before they give you the visa but if you are the sole legal guardian I can't see there would be any problems.

Thanks Britwife!  Yes, we'll have our visa apt. in Chicago in June.  After one experience you just worry a bit.

If you both have passports with the proper visas and the same last names, there shouldn't be an issue.  However, if it were me, I would carry a copy of the adoption/birth certificates too, just incase.
